Byzantium - What books am I missing?

I'm focusing on the Byzantine Empire - all aspects. Here is my Amazon.com wish list - Am I missing any crucial books for that area?

Please post title, author, anything that would help me build a better reference library.

I hope to eventually be able to build a website as objective as Norman's

Firebricks are also incredibly light and easy to break for their size. I've never seen a red firebrick. I have seen grey firebricks, yellow firebricks, saw a green one once... But never red. If it's standard house brick and not fire brick - I wouldn't...

Standard brick explodes when it gets too hot.

I suppose you could line the inside with firebrick though.

Hey Clay! If you're gonna wear it UNDER the gambeson, aren't you gonna sweat like a pig? (read: less breathability) The sweat won't wick away and will eventually saturate the leather - so water hardening will be a moot point (unless the leather is further treated...) I'm curious - why under the gamb...

Dale, the proprietor of the site, is a member of the Archive here too. You probably won't find any helms on his site though - as they wouldn't be SCA legal in plastic. Personally I've never handled his stuff, but I've never heard anything but good reports about him either.

Spear Shaft

**Not for SCA combat use** Looking for a source for about a 6' length of straight wood for a spear shaft. This will be for costume/display use - so it needs to be only halfway sturdy, but look nice and be really straight. I thought about a push broom handle - but that would be ugly. Would ironwood w...

Perhaps a cross crease?

Maybe I should expound...

Dish the helm halves sideways, so the weld runs from ear to ear, then crease the ridge from front to back.

Other than that, try welding some scrap together and see if you can flute it.

I have discovered the reason for the downfall of the Byzanti

The year is 1400AD, the emperor has been to England to speak with their king. Trade ships bring goods from all over Western Europe (Italy, Spain, England, and others) to Constantinople, including armour. So, the Byzantine armies are equipping themselves more and more with western armours, and distan...

From what I've been able to find in the University library, the Byzantine Empire had social and diplomatic relations with just about the entire known world. In 1400, the emperor (whose name escapes me at the moment) visited London to speak with the king. They traded further east, had ports in Italy,...
