I imagine the pendulum would be far more effective use of energy - the force (in psi) would be greater with less expenditure from the crew. The wheeled one with the log attached directly would work if they started from uphill and let the thing roll....

Some people use clear fishing line to sew butted maille to a backing. You can also try using the waxed thread for hand sewing leather.

I don't recall the possibility of riveting something to tightly together (unless it's articulation). Some helms just ring. To cut down on ringing, you can paint the inside of the helm with rubberized undercoating (see an auto parts store), some sound deadening panels (see auto parts store or a stere...

I have been told that to anneal stainless rivets, you need to treat it just like a copper one - heat it up ...

Oh, duh - I forgot to add - Stainless Steel is a non-ferrous metal (no iron) so to anneal it, you heat it up, and dump it in oil or water.

Sorry, no metalurgist, but if I'm not mistaken (which wouldn't be the first time it I was...) 304 stainless is the softest you can get - the other alloys get stronger and meaner to work with.
