Skiving - also known as edging. There is a little tool that slices the corners off of the square edge of the leather, making the edges more like an oval. Burnishing - I believe this is also called "Slicking", basically, using some gum tragacanth, you fill in all the edge pores, making the edges quit...

I would have to agree with Le Brassey on this one - plastic isn't my thing, but I'm not a "period material nazi" either...
