Re: Help with aluminum chain shirt
Back when the Chainmaille Board was a thing a guy would take his (not bright) aluminum hauberk to the car wash and spray it down with the high pressure hose. That would have been Lord Charles - the owner of the defunct board and defunct DeCordene Wireworks. He also used simple green to clean it. If...

Mac, is it possible that some are mistakes and others purposeful?

The one you posted above does look like an actual mistake.

More likely when you closed the blades without having the top side adjusted/tightened, you may have tweaked the hinge joint. Is there play there?

Re: Reminder: Shop Ventilation is Important!!!
Look at CO detectors (CO2 is carbon dioxide) for RVs - they're rated for -40 degrees to somewhere around 130 degrees. Typically 12V power, but a converter to plug it into a wall wouldn't be too hard of a stretch for the esteemed members here.

Is it graved out? If so, perhaps to lessen the weight?
I'd be interested in getting a better look at the back - looks pretty rusty, so one can't really tell if the it comes through or not.

Re: Any interest in waxed hemp arming points w/ brass aglets
Hi Tom, Points would be good - I know I will need some whenever I get my armour built. I don't know how many I will need for a 16th C steel suit - haven't gotten that far in the design phase yet. As a comparison of price and length, Historic Enterprises sells 22 inch long pairs for $11 plus shipping...

That'd be Aileen's Tacky Glue that you're thinking of Jeremy. It does work well - I use it for hobbies. It will dissolve in water, so cleans up fairly easily but is far stronger than Elmer's.

IceFalcon offers powder coating on his helms.
When I worked auto parts, a lot of accessory bits (roll bars, tube steps, etc) were powder coated. Chrome had a minimal warranty, but the powder coated stuff had a lifetime against rust.
Dunno if that helps.

Re: A question on bronze casting for sale
Lead added to the alloy greatly improves pouring characteristics. Thats why so many ancient bronze artifacts usually have lead in their chemical makeup. Anywhere from a just a little, to an awful lot. The foundries I used to know all charged a flat rate to fire up the unit, then you could cast as m...

The reason you don't see many people doing it, as Wade said above, is that it takes a massive amount of time. For people that sell their wares, they might find someone who would have the pockets deep enough to afford a piece that's engraved. For the most part though, people (very general people - br...

Re: A young guy with a dream: Apprenticeship
(work hat on) Apprenticeships are considered employment in many states (whether you're paid or not) - resulting in an additional employment tax burden on the armourer. Even if you're not paid during an apprenticeship, the various government (state, local, fed) agencies have charts and rates to deter...

Silicon Bronze is 97% copper, 3% silicon
High-Tin Bronze (C91700) is 84%-87% copper, 12% tin, balance is usually lead (about 0.25%), iron, etc.
Aluminum bronze (C95900) is 12% aluminum, 5% iron, and 83% copper.
Basically, you're looking at mostly copper plus whatever else you want to add.
