Re: WTB Looking to obtain Pexto stake plate, Beverly Shear,

Over in Manhattan, the group has a decent small shop in one of the guys' garage. Belt sander, drill press, RW punch, grinders, dishing, a throatless bench shear, etc. I have both of Llewellen's dishing forms - he has a thread up taking orders for them right now on this board. They're pretty nice. I ...

Re: WTB Looking to obtain Pexto stake plate, Beverly Shear,

What part of Kansas?

Farm auctions yield all sorts of fun stuff if you can get to one. The local flea markets can occasionally turn up useful things too.

I'm in North Central Kansas, myself.

Pexto plates and stakes can be purchased from Roper Whitney directly - they bought out Pexto quite a while back.

Re: Newbi helmet wanted.

Yowzer, you're in Bremerton area, WA then (my old stomping grounds) --- for those archivers who may have a helm to spare.

Helm measurement - take a cloth tape (as in, used for clothing - they're mostly plastic/fiberglass now) -- measure around your head at your temple level.

Re: Use of copper belt rivets for Armour

Copper belt rivets would be more expensive than you'd need. Some roofing nails (they're 1/8" shank usually) are very inexpensive, steel, and have a large head to hold the felt and canvas.

If you really want the copper, they'd probably be fine. I suspect your shell will fail before the rivets will.

Mike F posted over on Off-Topics a few months back - both a work bench and a work table. I built the work table in an afternoon. I can stand on it and jump without any issue. I've pounded metal on it and it doesn't move. It cost me $50 in wood and hardware - only because I didn't have any. Used a ro...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs

Getting the rivet hot enough - do you put the cap on after peining the rivet?

If so, does enough heat transfer to the helm (like a heat sink)? Does it "cook" the leather inside, or does it not get hot enough?

I'm showing my lack of soldering knowledge :)

Re: Deburr / Finish edges?

Speed makes fast (speed on the belt sander, for example). Speed also maims or royally screws up the piece if it happens to grab. Biggest thing to help with deburring is looking at how you're cutting the piece initially. If you're using a hammer/chisel, plasma, teeth, etc. - there's a lot of clean up...

Re: Let's talk about templates.

Yes - finish what you have - use what is finished to adapt the pattern to how you move the metal. It'll be different from how Sinric moves the metal (most likely). Then you have a pattern you made that matches you. Then you have an idea how most patterns will need to be adjusted for your tooling and...

I like seeing other people's patterns to show what the metal will look like before it's shaped. Trying to look at historical pieces and imagine them flat is difficult sometimes. I've never used a pattern as given, presuming they'll need a bit of tweaking and adjusting (the pattern) for my personal u...

Preference and time period, methinks.

If you catch a sword enough to tear a plate out of the leather, you've probably got bigger issues to worry about than losing a plate.
