Re: AAF

Has anyone here ever heard of another bulletin board, other than the AAF, having been hacked and completely deleted? Mac The Chainmaille Board went out that way. It never recovered - then the board owner had issues and disappeared (with lots of people's money in orders). I suspect the two are linke...

Re: SCA finger gauntlet construction?

Gauntlets do not need to "bottom out" on rattan to be safe. Finger gauntlets are legal as long as the fingers are padded. Check your rule book and if in doubt, ask your local marshal - they ultimately have to pass the marshal test to be on the field.

As a sport helm, it gets the point across - the lines are definitely different from the inspiration piece - but you've already mentioned that yourself. The grilled visor - I dislike grills myself, but it looks decent and gives the visor its shape. Is the visor and bar work all stainless too, or is t...

There's several Archivers in the "area" -- I think toward Olympia, there's also Ugo in Longview (a couple hours south of Tacoma) - Sir Mrks is over there somewhere too.

If it's armour - when you call - tell them it's SPORTING EQUIPMENT. If it's called armour, they'll think it's historical stuff from a museum or something and take longer or send it back.

Re: KALAMAZOO 1SM 1" X 42" BELT SANDER: review?

Define affordable. Polar Bear Forge offers a grinder-in-a-box kit (you add the motor) that folks use as a slack-belt sander. He has recommendations on motors too. It's more expensive than the amazon one - I suspect you'd get up there in cost if you were to go to a real tool store though (not harbor ...

Curt, the metallurgical tests would probably be destructive testing, yes?

You'd have to get through the rust to get to metal (otherwise the test would say "it's iron oxide").

It should be magnetic - but historical ones were too. I'm not up on tests though.

Re: What are the Best Snips?

I have those exact Knipex bolt cutters (what I was using for my rivets) -- according to that amazon page, 5.2mm is the capacity - which is roughly 3/16" I believe. They worked great on my steel rivets of various sizes, though I haven't messed with my 3/16" rivets yet. Edit - these look like a good s...

Something with 18" handles. Leverage is your friend.

That said, for the couple of things I've made, I used bolt cutters to "trim" down the requisite rivets.

Ok, basic questions (maybe) - Shooting for late 15th C early 16th C gothic How do you size the breastplate? Where is it supposed to "hit" the body? How far around the sides does it come before engaging the back plate? All the pictures I find are on dummies (which isn't terribly helpful) or with so m...

Dad used it a lot more than I did - he would rinse it off (hose, outside) and spray with wd-40 without drying it off - just saturated through the water. Then wiped it off and oiled/waxed from there. It was mostly old tools he was cleaning up.

Re: Need to remove a little surface rust

Cola is dilute phosphoric acid - that will eat everything, including the blackened finish. If you go that route, it will work and won't scratch the surface. Just watch it, wash it, and seal it. If it gets on the blackening, you'll have to redo that part. If you want it more as a paste, your local au...
