Re: And you thought EBAY prices were bad!

I thought to sell on Etsy, you had to make the stuff yourself. That's what my wife had to "agree" to when she signed up her shop.

What gauge metal? <SCA>

I'm going to be making myself some splinted greaves and splinted vambraces - I'm going to use stainless because -- well, because I want to. What gauge should I be looking at? My brain thinks 18g would be sufficient without being extra heavy, but I don't want them to bend too much if taking a direct ...

Re: HELP! Solid shield handles

Solid handles - I've always seen this done with Rattan rather than doweling, when it wasn't a metal handle. In the link you have, that's a wood handle riveted to a metal bar (think solid tang knife handle slabs). I've seen an armoury that sold the solid handles (shield basket without the basket) - b...

Re: Arming points

Ian - is the leather attached at all, or does the lacing hold it in place? If its unattached (other than the laces) - then the pourpoint is still washable since the leather comes out.

Meus_Vox -- that's the button-hole I was talking about - it's not really button shaped, but a sewn hole.

Re: Arming points

What about just sewing in some button-holes where you want the lacing to go through? two button-holes, side by side to loop the lacing through, then tie to the armour.

Yeah, I'd like one, but could use the same advice as Thorvaaldr - my current dishing form is the bottom of a smallish oxy tank (chopped off, of course).

Ashcraft sells these new for $125 for the 14 ga dome. (I won't go into the reputation of said armourer, since I don't have first-hand knowledge)

It's already overpriced on Ebay.

Re: ebay helm?

I don't remember RenStore ever selling something list-legal. Looks like the leather strapping has been redone recently (well, recently considering the rust).

Wonder where it comes from - seller is in AZ, but the rust implies somewhere else.

looks decent, once cleaned up

Check out Icefalcon. Dunno about the shield hook (or what that would look like on a thrusting tip), but he's got spear thrusting tip kits.

It's really an excellent system. You can get a kit for $40-ish on eBay if you look. Worth every penny.

Is that like these or these?

Re: Making compound curves with Leather?

I'm going to be running 10th C Byzantine, so a gorget of any kind is going to be anachronistic. I'm going to have to play with the neck a bit -- My gambeson (custom made by my mother i...

Re: Making compound curves with Leather?

As long as your "woefully underequipped" still includes a Dremel (even borrowed) you can drill sewing holes through the solebend and run artificial sinew through the holes. Drilling will be smelly, but it will work. That and a sharp knife or tinsnips to cut with and you ought to be able to do it. I...

Re: Making compound curves with Leather?

Currently, I use a loaner when I go to fighter practice (far less often than I'd like) -- when I build my helm, it will have an aventail which should make the gorget minimally necessary.
