Making compound curves with Leather?
Alright, question for the leather gurus. (SCA related, if it matters) I have one of Otto's dog-collar gorgets. My neck is too long though, so I have a gap when I put a helm on where a rattan sword can slip through. Rather than make a new gorget (which I'm woefully under-tooled for), I was thinking o...

Looks like those are riveted through the middle of the scale, rather than the top. Interesting design.
It looks like it may be of decorative use on a helm top here also.

The Ring Lord appears to have a new scale design. Looks like it still needs more holes, but it's closer.

How does it attach? Is the socket threaded, or does it rivet on, or is it purely decorative?

Re: POSSIBLE STOLEN ARMOUR!!
If my dad cleaned out a storage locker (if he won it on a non-payer auction) - he wouldn't have a clue what it was either. Of course, he'd probably throw it in the garbage too, but not everyone that sees armour is going to know WTF it is. People stop paying their storage fees - the storage company t...

Re: POSSIBLE STOLEN ARMOUR!!
Better safe than sorry? Doubtless; though barring some unexpected revelation, this looks so far to be a storage-cubicle auctioning-off that somebody won, followed by a "well, what the hell have I got here?" moment. No argument there - it looks exactly like that to me as well. The title of the threa...

Soak it in Coke (for a cheap way) -- otherwise Naval Jelly from an auto parts store works quite well also.

The helm on Plate 147 looks like something Ugo would do.
Plate 104 looks like a bar-grill
Plate 103 looks close to what the OP was looking for (interchangeable face plate?) - though it's actually pictured with it's armour on plate 96 (also with an alternate face plate).

Craig, Have you heard about cryo-tempering steel? I've seen knife blanks cryo-tempered and have heard (second-hand, admittedly) of race car components (engine components, mostly) being cryo-tempered. I found this - but it has little information. I know Texas Knife Works sells (or did) cryo-tempered ...

Well, not really - I'm not making a Coat of Plates, but something similar enough. What kind (and weight) of leather should I be looking at? Veg or chrome tan? What thickness (weight)? My brain wants to try and remember 5-6oz leather, but I don't remember if that was for the straps or the shell (or i...

Industrial magnets?
Personally, I'd plastic "tie-strap" the handle to the wall, so even with vibration and such, it won't come loose.

If hollow, could be used to focus heat from the big end to the small end to work something hot perhaps?

acid etching - it'll turn the rings slightly white, but will greatly reduce the black rub-off.

there's also the Foxtail chain (loop in loop over on MAIL) -- the rings are formed, layered into each other, then pulled through a draw-plate to get the desired size. The drawing process locks the rings together. Found the tutorial -- http://www.mailleartisans.org/articles/articledisplay.php?oldkey=...

Re: Design considerations - leaf spring power hammer
Maybe, wouldn't it have to be packed pretty good though, to not throw off the weight of a moving hammer? Maybe - the lead-shot filled mallet that I have ("dead blow") isn't packed, but it's not moving at 500-ish beats per minute either. One way to "pack" the handle - if you have a thread-on base (o...
