Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
Tom, you have some iffy stuff in there. For example, 1325 is from the 'Siegmaringen' harness in Detroit, and is a restoration. I know it. There's so little to go on, that it's worth while to look at the questionably stuff as well.... just to have something to think with. The ones I didn't mention, ...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
I have cropped out all the best views of the gauntlets from my pics. For comparison, see Goll's numbers 1049, 1071, 1323, 1325, 1326, and 4904. I will come back and link in some pics of those later. Mac I noticed that there are no good pics of the back of St. Florian's hands. Were you able to get e...

There are more extant banners than you might think.

Re: 14th Century greaves and cuisses- floating greaves or..
If the greave really fits badly enough that some padding won't help, there was a theorized strap that went internal to the upper greave posted on one of the earlier threads about greaves. No way to know that it is even possibly something that they did, but it could be a way to salvage otherwise ill...

Towards the turn of the century, you're in luck! It started to be used, though instead of front and center, it's off to the outside face, about 45 degrees from the center line. Post pin in the greaves, round hole in the demi-greave, and the standard strap going around the back. And the metal strap ...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
Mac, Can you elaborate a bit more about how you size the width of the leathers and the plates? I see your standard finger taper template and the tracing of your patron's hand, these are both Flat / 2D. Is the std finger template for the flat / 2d width, equivalent to the tracing? How do they relate ...

There is this hinge also from Berlin.
I posted some more images, with Goll's permission, in Jason Grime's Maximilian style hunting gauntlet thread a couple years ago.

Depending on how bad the fit is you might be able to add some foam to the top above the calf bulge to help with the fit.
A few pictures may help to get better advice.

How much overlap between the gauntlet cuff and the lower cannon is planned?
I would be curious to see the lower cannon's location in your gauntlet sketches, the ones over the tracing of your patrons arm.

Re: Coburg Bascinet: Another exercise in digital photo overl
This is sort of a back burner project.
Also I am probably going with a different bascinet.
I really like the Coburg bascinet but it has really been overdone in the last few years.
Even if there are only a few well done reproductions, I am thinking of going with another much less copied original.

Wow a 2 kg hammer!
You use that on hot metal?
Seems like way more weight than what most people use for hot work.
Is that for just the initial, hammer down the corners part or for more than just that?

It looks like the bevor may be one of those sorts that is intended to be worn inside the breastplate. That makes it a rare object indeed. Re: Question about the Lyle Bascinet authenticity.
Goll has a good point about being open about the veracity of items but I think we must be careful about his data. He has decided to err on the side of inclusiveness. When we look at his data we need to do so with our eyes open, we must look at where it came from. He obviously was only able to take h...

Re: Question about the Lyle Bascinet authenticity.
Yes, we must be careful with Goll's measurement data.
It is best to do just as James is doing and look at what pieces he measured.
The bascinet thickness data summary is all but useless since about 50% of the bascinets measured are fakes.
I don't understand why he would even present such data.

Yes, I had a couple of people tell me about some bad experiences. In one case the museum pulled out of bidding near the end then came back and got the item equal to the winning bid. The winning bidder told me he would have been will to go quite a bit higher to get the item. The item in question was ...
