Nicely done! As a possible follow up project you guys could build a similarly scaled onager and compare performance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onager_%28siege_weapon%29 Back in the early 90's I built one for a siege weapon competition. It was scaled to just fit in the bed of my Dakota with the to...

As far as I know only other bar, like the one I posted above, across the face of a sallet is on the Churburg CHS62 sallet.
Anyone know of others?

Also the hems on most if not all of these are just wrong, and none have the usual decoration on the hems either. Well... I thought that went without saying. Goll #3402 and #4779 bottom both look as though someone loved their bead roller and thought that a line of rivets like those on a Great...

What about greaves with flutes? I know of a few artistic depictions of fluted greaves but I don't know of any 100% trust worthy extant example. Here are the fluted greave I have found from Goll: Ref_arm_2335 https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-KkIJqnX_5Ns/VGtzaCBs8dI/AAAAAAAAqU8/VvWoIqdgBok/w247-h800...

Re: Goll's Thesis topic #3: Controversial or Suspicious Item

Thanks, Tom! It's clear that all the Vic'y stuff had the Siegmaringen backplate as their inspiration, some much better than others. 3321 ain't bad at all. The 4779 doesn't seem to have the holes for the missing border around the neck gusset the the Siegmaringen backplate does, which impacts its tru...

I think you probably already have the answer I understand why it's not an effective way to do but for those who wanted to anyway, why are there hardly any examples of such a thing? If you agree this would not be an effective way to do it why would you expect to find examples. I am not sure what your...

Re: Goll's Thesis Topic #4: Interesting New (to you) Objects

The pauldrons seem like the most obvious no-no's, but I expect that a careful inspection of the pieces including interiors would find more parts that we don't like. I can't prove it from the small picture. The met has a lot of stuff that is pretty mixed up. And some very nice pieces. Dean had fun. ...

Andrew, I have the gravest suspicious about the pouldrons. They look "nice" in that way the some reenactor stuff sometimes looks "nice", or the way Pre-Raphaelite art looks "nice". They are "nice" in a Violet le Duc sort of way. That is to say they pander to modern esthetics and modern interpretati...

Unfortunately, so am I -- I'll have to go dig into my file cabinet for old archaeological articles with the grave goods. Meantime, you can see a reconstruction here -- it's not, in my opinion, correct to the grave goods - should have more rods longitudinally, and what I saw doesn't support the "wra...

Re: Goll's Thesis Topic #4: Interesting New (to you) Objects

I'm not at all sure what to make of this object in the Met's collection. ref_arm_3150 It's weird, but that does not necessarily mean it's bogus. The pairs of stitching holes at the top give it a sort of verisimilitude. Likewise, the workmanship is good and the lines are bold and graceful. It might ...

Here is some additional wisdom from Jeff Wasson... What makes a pair of greaves good? Here's a drawing that better describes what I am talking about. Once again, tight around the top like a cone gripping the calf so it can't slide down into the ankle. Once it is past the thickest part of the leg it ...

Starting with "is the back snug enough"... There is some variability in this, and I don't think that we all agree on the exact fit, but there was a nice thread that showed some drawings of where it needs to fit and where it doesn't. I think the sketches are in Mac's Dusting off the Cobwebs thread p...

The first gauntlet I saw like that was on a tonlet armour in Madrid, made for Philip II's 'Knotwork' garniture by Desiderius Helmschmid in 1545.
