Here are the instructions you get when you buy a real beverly new. In general, clean, burr-free cuts can be made on a Benerly by setting the baldes 1/4 to 1/10th the thickness of the metal to be cut. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-fmWD0uD6ndU/VRlPjAQNcMI/AAAAAAABHvI/Fkqb3Dc7ss4/w846-h536-no/Scre...

Academia.edu article - Williams - Bullet Dents in Armour

Alan Williams - Bullet Dents in Armour Proof Marks or Battle Damage ABSTRACT- It is well known that the breastplates of many armours from the later 16thcentury and the 17thcentury bear the hemispherical dents generally known as proof marks. It has been taken as axiomatic that these marks were made ...

Mac It looks like the factors involved it this type of crack formation are "effective" carbon content, thickness, & hydrogen availability. These dictate how much preheat / postheat if any is needed. In your examples of the helmets and gauntlets the carbon content and hydrogen availibility should hav...

The turned edges on the 'Sigmund' cannons are pretty much just folded over maybe 1/8" at most. In this image from Goll you can see both how short the lower cannons are and the turned edge. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-JREznpCeVTY/VGVSrIVHGQI/AAAAAAAAaAc/B-ddhEzSMds/w416-h715-no/ref_arm_1074_0...

Tom, Is that really true for the 15th century? I have not looked at this aspect of them in great detail though so I really am not sure one way or the other. Might have to take a look at that. I assume the mail would be linked directly to the metal strip, but the row of holes has corroded away. I used to assume that as well, but lately, I am not so sure. Looking through the late 15th century backplates in from Goll is only slightly easier than looking through the bascinets :)

There are some horrible fakes, some pretty good fakes, then there are the ones that might or might not be real.
