For what you are trying to do, I think the Cylon style made by Patrick Thaden will give you the best mix of period look and usability. That's the one with the vertical pieces, not the simple open slot. For the Battle of Nations, you could always go with a good great helm padded correctly, not only ...

Provided that I can find find some pliers that I can modify to work as a rivet set and will meet the TSA's 7" overall length rule (see other thread) I now have a good way to spend the 175 - 200 hours a year I spend on planes crossing the Pacific. :D
