How about looking at Talbot's Analysis of 1300 effigies? No visual references but great on what was used when.

Probably Pensic in 1999, I think. Sir Johannes and I killed the king of Atlantia and about half his guard during the woods battle. I spent lots of time in John's booth talking about many different subjects. These conversations really changed my whole approach to the SCA and historical reenactment. U...

Re: Getting rid of mice in the shop
My friend's suburban garage here in San Diego had an infestation of rodents (mice AND rats) and we used .22 shotshells in pistols. We turned the stereo up louder than usual, and used safety glasses and faceshields - but the neighbours didn't seem to notice... I fondly remember the great rat hunts o...

Re: Getting rid of mice in the shop
I have a pair of rat snakes in my shop, one is well over 5' long. Haven't seen signs of mice in the last year or so. Almost scared the crap out of me the first time I saw them. I was looking for our missing house cat in a section of the work shop that has some water damage due to now fixed roof leak...

Not the Pembridge helm but one Kenric posted a photo for. Definitely rolled to the inside.

As Bob pointed out in this thread although rare the standard is sometimes shown on the outside in period art. I will see if I can find some examples to post.

Re: Alternative to shield basket?
I dislike shield baskets as well. For my demo shield I didn't want a hockey glove or other mundane solution either. I took a half-gauntlet pattern and re-drew it so it was connected on the inside wrist and removed the metacarpal section on the back. I built a sewn gauntlet front (in vaguely a churb...

For rebated steel, look up the Battle of Nations videos on youtube. You'll see a bunch of Eastern Europeans beating the hell out of each other with steel weapons, and no piles of dead bodies or gravely wounded. If you watch with a critical eye and a passing glance at their armour conventions, you w...

Not sure why you would recommend avoiding a period linen liner. The padded linen liner I have is hands down the best liner I have used in 15 years and I have used several types of foam. Guillaume, I use the padded linen liner from Revival US and love it. I have yet to meet someone who has switched ...

Some one posted a link to this video about a WMA group in Slovakia (make sure the captions are turned on). It touches on some of their ideas and motivation. If I had found a group like this 20 years ago I might never have joined the SCA.

Malcolm, aside from some pretty good SCA people like Arnora, one of my professional photographers from the magazine was there—Ron Manville. He shoots a lot of living history stuff mundanely. He got about 600 good shots - I've already seen some (wow, some of the best fighting shots I've seen ever). ...
