They are trying to simulate unarmoured sparring.
Lance wants to make sure that they are using good technique that would actually be an effective cut on an unarmoured opponent.

I think that the best thing that can be done to eliminate flat shots at a local practice is to get yourself a Sir Vitus Flat Detection System. Unfortunately, I think that the only existing system is currently in operation at the Barony of the Flame's practice in Louisville. :lol:

I think you are correct, lots of archers with knees only but no one with cuisses and knees without greaves.

I have noticed this as well. I would even go as far as saying that in almost every (90%+) battle or siege scene depicted in 15th century art where there is foot combat, you will find some men fully armoured from the waist up but with only clothing on their legs. We are not talking about archers here...

If it is a helmet issue, then you have gotten good advice. Are you sure it is a helmet issue? It took me about a year of trial and error to sort out exactly how much I have to drink and when I need to drink it, in order not to get a horrible heat / dehydration headache...
