A62, made for Archduke Sigismund or Emperor Maximilian?
This is a spin off from another thread where James Arlen Gillaspie and I were discussing who this harness was originally made for. Almost everyone is at least passingly familiar with the A62 harness in Vienna. Most people know this as the harness of Archduke Sigismund of Tyrol. https://lh3.googleuse...

Back on the original subject. Sean, I have posed here on the archive several times the warning "take care that is a composite harness". Hopefully each time I have elaborated a more complete description of my reservations. As others have stated "composite" unfortunately can have several differ...

Re: The idea of a "composite armour"
Hello, Tom; the essential problem is that the thing was listed in Ferdinand II of Tyrol's 'Hall of Heroes' as belonging to Sigmund of Tyrol, but there is no paper trail. A 62 certainly does not compare to A60, which is much smaller, though Pierre Terjanian thinks he was still growing when he got it...

Re: The idea of a "composite armour"
Without a doubt, studying the 'Sigmund Gothic' will tell you nothing about mid century Italian plate. Except, perhaps, by the remarkable design differences. Well, this is not a question about a style of armour, but why some people are sure that a harness whose pieces are slightly seperated i...

Greaves with integral compression articulations behind the knee don't appear to have a rolled edge on the upper back (that I can see with the photos I have) - does anyone have a "back" photo of the Tyrol greaves? I am trying to figure out what the hell that square hole in the fabric hole is. It does not seem to serve any other purpose other than to expose the steel underneath. Re: Cleaning an antique maille shirt of it's rust
Sometimes a flower is just a flower. I think we are seeing what's left of a decorative plate of a broken fastening for the neck closure. The short side may have once born a hook or a loop. Presumable there were other mounts like this one which have been lost altogether. http://forums.armourarchive....

Re: Cleaning an antique maille shirt of it's rust
Quite interesting. The riveted copper-alloy plate is almost certainly a city or arsenal mark rather than something from the maker. Perhaps we can find something similar: a cinquefoil with three tulips(?) radiating from it. Perhaps city arms, a seal, symbol for a saint? I would suggest posting this ...

Thanks Tom! That's a great list. If I may ask: how did you come up with those numbers? Your search-fu is strong... I'm shooting for 15th Century, but not a particular decade. I'm shamelessly picking components that I like the look of for this mish-mash first harness. :) Does anyone know when 'full-...
