I was fighting at a recent interbaronial war, dueling spears with Sir Mark. He said, "That arrow hit your leg" I think "Wha? Arrow? What arrow?" I look down and there is an arrow laying right in front of me, I still don't feel it, don't have any recollection of it hitting me, but I know that Sir Mar...

A couple of things come to mind, one is the quality and thickness of your paper, and the ammount of pressure you are using. A good quality heavyweight paper won't tear very easliy, even with heavy pressure. One thing that is important is that the serifs you are trying to reproduce were done with a d...

It is maddeningly difficult to figure out relative cost from then to now, especially as we share almost nothing in common. Manufacturing and the diminishing role of small local farms skews our prices miserably. It not even that easy now, you've often head that in much of Africa you can get an AK-47 ...

Here is a good thread on this topic. m I know we like to find "standard practices" for things, but it is my opinion that is a world where almost everything was made locally and by hand, variations were the norm. There are few paintings and stone work that show the inside of period shields, but of th...

Thank you Sir Gaston, Do you have a resource that would instruct me on how to tailor/taper the sleeves? If I go full length it will be very important to gradually reduce the diameter. Is it as simple as laying out the sleeve and "sewing" it together with a taper? Kat-H, I'll take some detail shots o...

Ah, found it thank you I did not see the tabs. That looks awesome, even though it is "faking it" it still looks right . I had also thought about making the body out of fabric with leather plates and reinforcements, as the full leather vest is quite warm in the summer. It also answers my question on ...

Indeed, I've been looking for pics as well. There were a lot of folks with cameras... Wow, many questions. And thank you for the compliments! Cost, hmmm. The wire is cheap, but the real cost of mail is time. I made these bit by bit over a year or so, but I think if you were to purchase a set of riveted sleeves it might cost you a couple of hundred? (mail makers please correct me) It ...

Mail sleeves. Faking it...
So for all us pre 14th century folks who should be wearing mail cap a'pie but have little desire to wear lots of heavy armor that does us all but no good for against the bludgeoning effect of rattan weapons. Not to mention that almost all of it gets hidden underneath a surcoat. I've been working on ...

Ditto, I just sew cuffs onto a pair of gloves last night in fact. Oswyn is correct that the Saracen's used a concave round shield, but the ones in the picture I posted are from Italy. I actually have no idea how you would make a shield like that out of wood, but there are many armors who sell aluminum shield Blanks in that style. I'm exploring an estern counter pe...
