Re: Edward II Conspiracy?

The "incognito monarch" is one of the standard tropes of legend, literature and history. Arthur sleeps in Avalon; Harold becomes a holy hermit, and JFK is in a vegetative state in a secret room of a Dallas hospital. "The deaths of princes demand great circumstances…" so Edward II couldn't have been ...

If you're breaking all of your handles, you either have a bunch of old, very decrepit secondhand hammers from the flea market, or you're doing something really wrong. Just how hard do you hit? Are you going to injure yourself? Are you using very small hammers and trying to move stock over 1" s...

I think it was one of these: http://jas-townsend.com/product_info.ph ... ucts_id=81

The original looks a little uglier and rougher; but it worked out well by the time I finished with it.

The time you spend modifying it will be about equal to starting from scratch, i think. Yep. Also. It did save a few steps, but part of the charm was that it...

Re: Sound dampening idea

Be very careful if you do any hot-work. Flame spread on any exposed vertical carpet or other inflammable material on the walls can be rather sudden. Sometimes placing (fire proof) sound-absorbent tiles at the three surfaces of your ceiling corners and other like locations can be useful. So, think fi...

According to Anvilfire: "Stove black, the old-fashioned stuff, is graphite powder in a thin vehicle with a minimum binder. When rubbed onto iron it imparts a shiny silvery-black finish similar to polished hematite." I'm not sure if this is a help; but you could also check out the search engines. The...

You can do a lot better for 400 bucks. That thing is beat to death. Definitely was used by an amateur-a real smith would have taken better care of it. If you are going to do smithing later you will want some corners left-and grinding it down that much is going to remove the hard part of the face. "...

Just saw the first show, and it wasn't that bad; but I'm baffled about that steerboard being on the left side of the boat. Was it ever done that way? In all of the vessels on which we have archeological evidence, plus illustrations, illuminations and picture stones, the steerboard is on the steerbo...

What's historically correct for that sort of thing, though? We have little enough as it is to point us in the right direction, so this hue and cry for historicity is going to fall on largely deaf ears. There's just no way to tell- what do they have to go on? Artistic impressions, paintings (if they...

Well, it looks like they have the steerboard bass-ackwards! Either that or the pictures are all reversed and they use an awful lot of left handers. The ship looks pretty "chunky" to me for the type that she is. About 50 foot. The negatives MUST be reversed, since the steerboard in both shots is shown on the port side. I can't believe any competent shipwright is that dumb. Also, there are oar racks but no oars on them, or (visible) oar ports. An...
