Re: Looking for info on big tents 1400 - 1550
I find this structure overly ambitious and ugly. It looks like a cross between a Church and a steamboat. In addition, it probably does poorly in the rain; the low trough between the "nave" and the "side isles" leaves no place for water to go. One of the ugliest things about it is the way it is divi...

I second Master Thomas on the post vise. Mount it low and on an independent post with a good foundation. I use if for hardies, fullers and stakes all the time; as needed. It's also a great favorite with friends when something needs to be "unstuck."

Re: Leather straps on mail armor?
So, in the Cleveland Museum of Art example, above, is the coat overlapped with the straps up the front, or do they have it backwards with the helm turned around? If you have squires, or servants, or even friends, they can buckle it up the back for you; otherwise (unless overlapped) it sort of opens ...

The production company got back to us; but they went lowball on us. No problem with the ship rental (~$1k for a commercial venture; we charge less if it's truly an educational enterprise) BUT they knocked down what the reenactors would get (~$200 + food + crash space) to (paraphrase) "Oh, we could u...

Re: Tinyhouse for camping events?
Travel trailers are made to travel. Tinyhouses (and the like) are made to be transported.
It's sort of the difference between a camp chair and a Barcalounger. Both are transportable, but one is designed for it.

Or air dried, a lot of pallet wood is air dried in the USA. Trying to find *nice* pieces of the correct species is the trick. And you can always fall back on your coal forge (if the weather is right and the neighbors aren't too fussy). When I was a kid, and a great "Prince Violent" fan, I depicted mail by simple cross-hatching, no doubt depicting the rare "fireplace screen" mail pattern.
(Actually, we did once try to adapt fireplace screen for armor. Don't bother.

Also, bear in mind that as moderns we tend to use the term "free" as a binary -- you're free or you're not. The medieval world didn't attach it to a binary, and a person who was "partially unfree" might actually have significantly greater status than somebody who was "wholly free." Better an honest...

Building Your Own Dragon Harald Fairhair How big, how quickly, how authentic? The numbers are out there once you decide. The museum in Roskilde offered to build an absolutely authentic replica for us in the 32' - 40' for the low six figures. Twenty foot faering boats go for $4,000 to $8,000 or more....
