Re: Which gauge wire for chain mail?
Most of the tie wire I’m familiar with is annealed, and might not hold its shape under field conditions.

Re: Why do helmet type names end in 'et'?
What is usually referred to in the Early Medieval period as a "helm" becomes a "helmet" when the "great helm" becomes common. So, in our Viking age reenactments, I'm wearing a helm, but in a later period, it becomes a "helmet" and then the term spreads to all ...

Re: Sound Dampening Magnet
Another method of sound reduction that I've seen is to drape a heavy chain over the anvil or tool; or wrap it around the waist. It may not reduce all of the noise, but it really can kill the ring if done right. Some experimentation should produce results. Magnets, if heated, will lose their magnetis...

Into the 19th century a pastime for sailors was to turn a pack of bilge rats loose within a coil of rope and see how many you could kill just using your head and upper body, no arms or hands. (I would have to be pretty bored to consider this a pastime. ) Rocket cats can catch rocket pigeons! Biringu...

Barring extreme weather, our 2011 autumn session of Camp Fenby will take place on November 11 – 13, Friday (Veterans Day) through Sunday, in Oakley, Maryland. It might have been just before you wandered off, but the Longship Company got a new ship. (So far, we've only had a couple of AA folks out on her. Too many "dry land" Vikings around!)

Actually, my response was only partly facetious. Maintenance was/is one area where we expect minimum labor, and we receive maximum disappointment. Any exterior ironwork, and even interior, ironwork or brass needs constant inspection and attention. In the old days, we had other folks do it; these day...

Don't forget about the "ship shields" that would be available to the crew. The Gokstad ship had alternating yellow and black shields along the gun'ls, two per rowing position. If the warband was from the same ship, they might bear fairly uniform shields instead of individual shields. Stowa...

I've used the entire B series extensively. A B1 will cut the easily cut the circumference of a dime in 16g. A B-2 will cut the circumference of a quarter in 14g mild. A B-3 will cut the circumference of a half dollar in 12g. All circumferences are based on US coins. SNIP Three, sirrah?! One of each...

Floor space? Probably not much more than my B-3 (actually, less, it's mounted on a separate work table, and the handle swings out into the entryway). The real question is how much is a tool used, and how versatile is it? Can it do all the stuff you want it to do? I bet it does for Chris; but it's pr...

I lucked into a B-3 many years ago, I think it was $350, and old Rusty* let me put it on lay-away. On the other claw, Eric Thing started with (I think) a B-1 and then went to a B-2 and has been happy ever since. (More on Eric at m ) But then, as an armorer, I'm a pretty good blacksmith, so maximum c...

Re: 'New Vasa' shipwreck found on Baltic seabed
I was under the impression that the "Vasa" reference was in relation to her size, and state of preservation, rather than her state of technology. It will be intersting if they can raise and reconstruct the hull in some form; especially with the Vasa and Mary Rose as inspirations.
