My very limited research into the background and context of this article makes me wonder why Peder decided to post it. For further reflection????? We all know that there is at best an uncomfortable relationship between all the levels of Calloway's sliding scale. Even if the actual "label words" the...

I think chivalry is a way to live honorably and treat others with courtesy. It is a way of being that has nothing at all to do with station or occupation. It is many other things besides. I do not think this is romanticized at all. A farm boy can be as chivalrous as a knight and a knight can be a b...

I don't know anybody in this discussion who thinks that wearing a wristwatch while "on" is ok.

No, but replace "wristwatch" with "glasses" and watch the sparks fly! ;)

OT: It comes from "Far be it from me to tell you that [insert something unflattering about the addressee's kit here]". Actually, I have recently heard a far more believable version of it's origin: that it came from the German "farbe", which means "color"; e.g. a person who's kit is rather inaccurate...

For me, it's about intellectual honesty. If I'm going to go get food from a cooler, I'm going to admit that I'm being farby. If something that you do is farby, then call it such. Whoop de doo, I was a farb for feeding my kid out of a plastic bottle at the last few events. BING BING BING!!!! From my...

Hence the old joke: How do you get a dozen Normans into a porta-potty? Tell them it isn't theirs.

HAHA! That's pretty funny... I love history jokes. I'd never heard it, but it's sure going on our website. :)

I use a wooden chest to haul my mail and nasal helm in; I've been looking for a barrell to do the same. For plate, I'd personally go with the pieces wrapped in wool in a basket, wooden box, or leather bag. For international transport, though, a duffel bag or gun case is the way to go. ;)

for the record, I assume you're basing this question in an SCA frame of reference?

I found this:* They didn't have pole arms in Outremer. They had "stick" arms, because it's the best that the barbaric, backwards west could come up with. Only with significant contact with the enlightened east could they borrow ideas and technology that would one day allow them to make good copies o...

An Open Letter to Historic Enterprises

Dear Jeff, Gwen, et. al., I'm sure you've noticed that reenacting the 15th century, and those who reenact it, are yesterdays news. It's not cool, and no one likes it. At all. If they do, they're crazy and silly. To that end, I think you should drop all that 15th century junk and start focusing exclu...

The historical idea of the berserker is somewhat controversial; most scholars have rejected the actual existance of such a thing. Most of what you describe is generally considered fantasy.

Is it an interpretive event? Wear a wide-brimmed hat and stay out of the sun. For a private/reenactment/etc. event, I'd say wear the sunglasses; you've got a pretty good reason.
