The Normans seem to be the exception to the (so-called) rule that "everyone in the medieval period wore a head covering".... as Stephen says, there isn't really any conclusive evidence as to what they wore on their head; the evidence there is suggests that they didn't wear anything. Practically, thi...

Since you're posting here, I assume you have internet access...
I went to Google.
I typed in "Maciejowski Bible"
I came back with 9,490 results.
The FIRST TWO were:
http://www.medievaltymes.com/courtyard/ ... _bible.htm
http://www.keesn.nl/mac/index.html
The total process took me about 15 seconds before I had websites that had scans of every image in said Bible.

That was one of the two reasons I wanted to reenact the Battle of Hastings when I was in High School. High impact article, cool illustrations. That issue was one of my first influences as well... I remember coming across it at a garage sale, getting it for all of $.10, and taken it home and being c...

You guys are all arguing tactics (the sign of an amature ), and the real final arbitrator in war is logistics. LoL, touche Herr Moltke! As I'm sure you know (and others should read if they haven't), Bernard Bachrach has made a career partially by doing neat little mathematical equations like this: ...

What a great conversation... One thing I'm noticing, though, is that when the words "medieval warfare" are being discussed, particularly in this case, everyone goes into a battle-centric or large-force-centric type of thinking. One of the most interesting (to me, anyway) aspects of medieval warfare ...

There may be one more wrinkle to consider. Horsemen are not strategically faster than infantry, unless the horsemen have a very large train of replacement horses. Hmmm, care to elaborate a little bit on why you arrive at that conclusion? You make this statement in the begining, but the rest of your...

They'll actually be three "hangers on", Kim, since Pris will be going to and will definitely not be dressing out. A good time should be had by all! After the battle, we're going to hang out in Sussex for a bit, then take several days in Normandy itself, though time will be split between medieval coo...

So, you want a website for medieval reenactors where they can discuss their kit, how they do things, their events, and recruit for their group, but you don't actually want them to discuss their kit, how they do things, their events, and not focus on groups? Sorry, but I'm not sure I see what exactly...

Grimstone, First, let me apologize for coming across as condecending and rude. To be honest, I was a little taken aback at your posting, coming across to me as negative and icy as it did. Based on what you've posted about your experiences, it appears that you have had experience in reenactment, rese...

I am interested in 'those that created it' who are those people exactly, who do you mean, what is this 'real living history'? Here are some definitions of living history by the people who helped invent it, study it, develop it, and do it every day: m (this site has, by far, the best discussion of w...

Mr. Bar, I finally have to make a few comments about your well-meaning but ill-informed/mistaken commentary... the obvious derision in which you use the term "living history" as a perjorative doesn't really help your case. Living History came about in the middle to late 1980s as a result of people w...

Other than a couple of relatively minor incidents I think the event went off very well indeed. Everyone who attended said that they had a grand time and that they were pleased with it (of course, would they really tell me otherwise? ). The weather cooperated very well, and was similar to a nice spri...

Something else, folks: It looks like the weather will be very nice for our event (which is always my big worry): m Almost 70 on Friday, 65 on Saturday, with rain only moving in during the afternoon of Sunday. Wanted: Medieval cartographer/artist/illuminator
Folks, I'm looking for someone to make me a custom, period (esque) map of the English channel, specifically the Sussex coast and the coast of Normandy, in period inks, in a period style, on vellum or other appropriate material. Wow, thanks Risto! That's great site... I've often wondered where artists came up with that interpretation of a conical; it's nice to see it's from an actual piece rather than a "guess". To me, it certainly looks like the pieces on the nasal allow the nasal to be removed from the helmet and drop dow...

Conroi Fitzsobern/Vikings NA event UPDATE
Everyone, We're all very excited about the upcoming event near Bostwick GA. Hopefully lots of folks will be able to attend. Some questions have come up, so I wanted to answer them. There will be ample camping space on site, both a "period" encampment (or two) and a modern encampment. Everyone will b...
