The Normans seem to be the exception to the (so-called) rule that "everyone in the medieval period wore a head covering".... as Stephen says, there isn't really any conclusive evidence as to what they wore on their head; the evidence there is suggests that they didn't wear anything. Practically, thi...

Have you seen the latest edition National Geographic? There's an article about the Celtic Revival--I've read it briefly.

I've seen the article (hard to miss all the nekkid folks :) ), but have not read it through. What's your take on it?

I like to think of it as Medieval/Renaissance Revival and not re-enactment.

Humph.... that's about the simplest, best single-sentence description of what the SCA is I've ever read.

Do you have any evidence that this is what they would have done, i.e. owned tents and taken them to such a gathering?

Since you're posting here, I assume you have internet access...

I went to Google.

I typed in "Maciejowski Bible"

I came back with 9,490 results.

The FIRST TWO were:

http://www.medievaltymes.com/courtyard/ ... _bible.htm

http://www.keesn.nl/mac/index.html

The total process took me about 15 seconds before I had websites that had scans of every image in said Bible.

"Invasion" is such a dirty word... I prefer "Normans invited in by one side to help defeat the other side, all sides eventually regretting inviting them into the country in the first place, because they're a bunch of greedy conniving bastards". but an "invasion", no way. ;)

Here's a question:

If these norsemen really were so big and tough, sailing the seas in all kinds of weather all day long, wreaking havoc, and their lords rewarded them with gold and jewels for fierce, life-threatening combat, why do we think that they even needed or wanted a tent to sleep under?

What a great conversation... One thing I'm noticing, though, is that when the words "medieval warfare" are being discussed, particularly in this case, everyone goes into a battle-centric or large-force-centric type of thinking. One of the most interesting (to me, anyway) aspects of medieval warfare ...

There may be one more wrinkle to consider. Horsemen are not strategically faster than infantry, unless the horsemen have a very large train of replacement horses. Before I wade in, a question/observation:

When someone says "the use of medieval cavalry", why is it always "charge headlong into a mass of infantry"?? Why is it always the "shock" tactic that gets the play, and not the multitude of other tactics/methods cavalry is used in war?

Yes, it is pretty straightforward for you, since 98% of the trip is on interstate. Just hop on the nearest interstate, follow mapquest, and the site is about 15 minutes off of I-20 just east of Atlanta.
