"Normans of the Sun" LH group?
There used to be a group called (I think) Normans of the Sun, who portrayed Siculo/Italian-Normans in the service of Robert Guiscard... their website disappeared a while back. I was wondering if anyone here was a member or knows anything about them, if they are defunct, etc. Thanks!

While I generally agree with Chef, I'd have to say that the closest the Medieval era proper came to an absolute monarch was William I ("the Conqueror") of England. He basically had the opportunity to (and I'm simplifing here) to start, from scratch, a system laid out the way he wanted and it was mai...

Yes, my discussion centered around the SCA, but purposefully included LH and the ren faire crowd to make a point about the varying levels of authenticity encountered within those three kinds of groups. And my point is that comparing those different games only breeds misunderstanding, leads to anger...

Thanks Chuck, but anyone who has read anything by Nicolle has been aware of this phenomenon for some time. As we all know for a fact, the only things that originated in pre-crusade Europe were dirt, boorishness, and several types of lower-quality cheese. Everything the knight is wearing can be trace...

Oh Lord... Please note that this discussion seems to be focused on authenticty (it's levels and perceptions) within the SCA , and that's perfectly fine and healthy. If posts are made that turn it into an "us vs. them", such post will be edited/deleted at the editor's discretion.... sorry to make the...

Like most of us, when I started out I worshipped the day when the MRL catalog would arrive. As I've 'matured', it has become more of a comic book. There are still a few items in there I'd like to get (well, quite a few but not for LH), but by and large I've come to realize that trying to take them s...

if guilds had anything they had rules and standards to create and maintain monopolies on supply and end finish. You join a guild knowing and expecting to adhere to standards of finish and working practice. Absolutely, but I think the guilds were more concerned with an appropriate level quality/fini...

Steve, An EXCELLENT point well made. Of all the things in our encampments that are most obviously "wrong" to the quasi-trained eye I think that wood items are at the top of the list. It is so hard for most of us to have access to the proper woods, or have the time/skillset to prepare an authentic pr...

James, Halv, and any other interested parties: We had discussed having this event in VERY late February or early March: early enough (down here) to avoid blazing heat/humidity but early enough to also avoid frequent rains. Originally the event had been planned as a private living history event, whic...

Glen, I'm real sorry to hear about what happened. We will get to meet up again, but it might just have to wait until next year Sorry to hear about your troubles, Pete, and glad it's a managable thing. Oh Lord, I was dreading this making the rounds.... We got up there, and after about 1.5 hours of getting the horses picketed and the tents set up, I slip in a grassy muddy spot on the hill, turning my left foot outwards. Everyone thought/hoped it was sprained, but... I get to the hospital, yep, ankl...

Gents, Did a bit of editing to remove strains of cluelessness and references thereunto. It is an interesting article, though, as has been previously stated in terms of 1) how interesting the parallel development of ideals/images/etc is, and 2) the dangers (and, dare I say, complete sillyness) of goi...

WANTED: Paul Binns Combat/live steel sword
Folks,
I'm looking for a Paul Binns combat sword of any type (as long as it doesn't have a tea cozy pommel). Please leave a message here or contact me via email ASAP if you have one you would like to part with.
Thanks,
GK

I find myself most agreeing with Mr. Womble on this fact, but (of course) would like to add my own thoughts in... I easily agree that the primary use of the David vs. Goliath story is one to show that, no matter how weak or small someone/thing is, if they/it has God on their side, they can't lose. G...
