We have little concept of the ties of duty and obligation that bound medieval society, so we see it through the prism of our own post-Enlightenment society. Well said and absolutely correct, Fearghus, which is why I think it's VERY important to portray the non-noble folks to the public and burst ap...

Bob, even though you and I have chewed this topic over many a night, and we both feel pretty much the same way, I'll share my thoughts for those unenlightened who haven't been with us. What do you think, is the group as a whole important? Is it more important than personal likes and dislikes? As we ...

Well, Jenn, I took your advice, and let me tell you.... it was indeed well worth it! I thought it was a very well put together movie. The acting was great, sets and costume was superb, and dangamighty if ya'll forgot to mention that SIR Peter Ustinov was Frederick the Wise! I thought it did a really...

Tim, Your list seems to be rather complete about the recent 'advances' and points of discussion in Viking-period living history. The llamellar discussion is very interesting to me, as I have no real horse in that race yet love to examine how the reenactment/LH community deals with the question; it's...

Assuming that your hypothetical person actually has a desire to do things Right: At the risk of sounding like an elitist, I think folks doing an impression for a more-difficult-to-research period should be among the more responsible from a discerning historicity point of view. In other words, a begi...

A very good topic to bring up, Flittie, with good responses by all. From my personal perspective, I believe that if you were forced to rank the most universally influential aspects upon the lives of medieval folks, religion would be No. 1. As such, I believe that the inclusion and discussion of reli...

I'd suggest a good search of the Online Reference Book for Medieval Studies (www.the-orb.net), which contains a wealth of information. You might want to start here:

Akmatov, I admire your desire to portray a persona of a religious order, especially in an organization which has, as a group, always behaved in a rather dodgey manner concerning such. I am not a member of the SCA, but from what I understand (as Connor said) what your arms and and what you wear can b...

To take the question further re: Erik's input: given the sparse evidence we have, is there any indication that mail mittens were predominately something reserved for knights (i.e. mounted warriors), or do they appear for infantry as well? The Mac Bible springs to mind as an example showing infantry ...

I *still* think Stamford Bridge is more important than Hastings, longterm... but I'm not likely to be very popular with such a view... Oh-ho, but your very position indicates your appreciation of subject and various points of view. My personal opinion is that to rank any of those three battles in 1...

Apart from the Big Ones (Hastings, etc), I find the lesser-known-but-just-as-important ones that folks tend to forget, like Civitate (is that the one you meant in #5?), Manzikert, etc. However, I am most interested in trying to find out more about the (to apply a modern phrase) small-unit engagement...

Mael, It is indeed broken into pages. I also have the little fold-out version (I got mine at Battle, UK), but the book is much better. There is 'overlap' from a page to page so you don't have an awful lot of "bad" cuts, plus having it reproduced so large can allow you to see details that the little ...

I'd LOVE to do a LH group based on De Soto's passage through North Carolina but that's just a wee bit too niche to fly. Nobody seems interested. Hey, that's two of us, if we can do DeSoto's entire expedition! I started a file about 4 years ago for DeSoto-era stuff that I put things in every now and...

16th century LH groups: where are they?
I'd like to pose a question to my fellow dressing-up-in-costumes-for-fun bretheren (and sisteren) that I've pondered off an on for some time: In my experience, it seems that there are folks out there willing to do reenactments/LH for practically every time period. Everyone has their own particulare ...
