Here's a good one... while not a question it was defiantly a funny experience with the mundane public... I was resting out of the way at a public demo after fighting when three boys come up to me on their bicycles. They stood there looking at me for a bit like I had just got off a UFO or something. ...

Agh yes, padding and attaching gloves to gauntlets: the bane of every heavy fighter... Like above get some mouse pads and cut them to fit behind your gloves. Sew them on at several points around your gloves... Another option is use heavy welders gloves, as they are thick enough to supply the padding...

It's how you can keep fighting in this game after your doctor tells you that one more good headshot that compresses your neck will leave you either dead or paralyized. Seriously. It's a great workaround to a limiting problem, and I'm willing to call it an aviary/great bascinet and be done with it. ...

Yup it's HDPE. Thanks for the link! My first suit was HDPE barrel armor. Seriously consider tying together it with nylon Para cord... Once you tie and melt the knot a bit with a lighter it’s pretty much connected for life… A glue joint on the other hand will always have that threat of failing w...

I understand folks are saying Arnica helps make bruises go away, but how does it really do that? RoaK, I thought it was the Saxons who won. We were the side facing the pavilion, without the two dukes and an earl. I was having too much fun to be really paying attention to the score, though. Oh, we w...

I've always thought a thrust to the face from a single handed weapon should be a good stout shot... (about what good spearman hit us with in the face). This type of shot requires good aim and technique. A dinky it-tag touch shot is BS and should be considered incidental contact (well for me anyways).

Here we go, this might answer our question. In a nut shell it would appear there was no types of tax as contracts were agreements for service and pay was exactly that; pay to the merc company for services rendered. Since we don't really take loot for a defeated enemy in the SCA (to any real degree) ...

Re: Hey Mercs
If not, why not? Do you consider yourself part of the Kingdom or are you a group outside of the SCA? Thanks! D. Gotta ask this question of you. Why is it part of the kingdom or Outside the SCA? as opposed to Part of the kingdom or not. This division of mindset comes, from my observation, prevalent ...

Sounds like an idea that could make the game a bit more interesting. One problem would be that some merc households are spread over more than one kingdom (like Clovenshield) and that could cause some confusion. I'm sure something could be worked out. Tax us all you want; we'll just increase prices t...

I'm a bit confused: are we talking about a thrust to an unprotected face or a thrust to a face protected by draped chain? If we are taking bets on this ( and I hope we are) I bet its hard to kill that pig. Let me tell you a story... At a long ago Pennsic war people who will not be named decided it would be swell to bring a pig, kill it onsite and cook it. What could possibly go wrong with that? So this real life karat...

Need something translated into Latin
Greetings, I'm kicking around the idea of eventually painting my Kettle. I know it's period to do so but I wanted to show my idea here to get some input and I need a translation. It's going to be red and black (my colors) halved with the brim being red and black reversed with the dome... anyways I'm...

Re: Most under represented culture/persona in the SCA
The Church. Yeah, that's what I was going to say. I agree, aside from a few monks, a priest or two and some crusading orders the church is strangly absent form SCA play. Any thoughts on why this is? Wouldn't you just love to see 4 or 5 Popes at an event blasting everyone's souls to hell for not fol...

I like the grrrr woof helm for it's cool looks and being historic... I'd cast a vote for that one if I had a say.
...but, you know, I just can't just shake the notion of you looking like a SCA super villian in that other helm...
Perhaps get two face plates made?

Hey, practice does get results... imagine that!
Here’s some proof for you new fighters practice works… This year (on the pick up field) at Pennsic I was getting hit in the leg allot because I was raising my shield up way too high to block shots to my head. Anyways I swore to myself to fix this. I've been really working at blocking shots to my...

24x36 curved heater. Okay, just out of shear morbid curiousity, what is wrong with 24x36 curved heaters. I'm curious, because that's what I use, mostly because somewhere along the line (even before I started fighting) I picked up that a 24x36 curved heater was how a shield was SUPPOSED to be made. ...

Like Hal said be sure to clean the surface of all oils and dirt and then sand it with about 80 grit sandpaper so the surface is rough. this makes the paint stick better to the surface. If you skip this part your paint will crack and chip off the helm/shield or whatever. And that's not counting being...
