Does putting an air mattress on a rope bed help at all in terms of the air mattress itself sagging? My girlfriend absolutely HATES air mattresses, so we're using a camp cot right now, but I'd love to upgrade to a rope bed. The ropes help prevent the bottoming out on the slats feeling you get with a...

Camp bed for sale ( Midrealm near Cincinnati Ohio )
I've decided to sell my camp bed to motivate myself to build a new one. I want to go with a darker stain to better match the rest of my camp furniture. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r295/ConalOhAirt/SCA%20Beds/8dd6-1.jpg I probably should have done this before Pennsic but.... Its made to fit a ...

it's entirely possible that this is not a medieval concept and there are no examples to be had. But never say never and never say aways.... Here are some other examples that might be useful. early 19th century..... http://nancyfishelson.com/photos/forsale/43007/folding_cot_sm.jpg Victorian http://ww...

This is not me arguing that it is medieval. I do not want anyone to think I am. Its just a platform on legs when its flat. When you look at it that way it is medieval-ish. Our needs to have things pack up and transport easily are not medieval at all. If you where of sufficient rank to get your bed c...

here we go.... http://www.canadianhomeworkshop.com/multimedia/img/photos/biz/CanadianHomeWorkshop/zloung78200.jpg This would probably fit your requirements. It would not look modern. It could be used at a cot also. It would pack flat and not take up much room. With some minor adjustments to the plan...

I have had to find bones for knife handles many times. As someone already suggested, I feel the pet store is the best place to find. Anohter way, if the handle is small enough, is to order precut bone for handles. Here is a link to an example. Look 3/4 of the way down for 4-1/4 x 1-1/8 x 1/8 White ...

from what little I know it is more likley to be too hard. I have heard that making strikers out of old files and then trying them and normalising / annealing them a little at a time till they work well is a common way of doing it. the harder flint needs to be able to shave off thin pieces of the so...

Give a dog a bone? ( Knife handle )
If I were to go to a butcher and ask for a bone that I could then use to put bone plates on the handle of a knife ( full tang ) what bones should I be asking for to get the best yield of usable bone from? this specific knife.... http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r295/ConalOhAirt/scan0001.jpg

Remind me to tell you sometime about the time I tried to buy coal from that big depot on the riverbank. Turns out, there are much much better places to buy coal. Excellent work for your first time out the gate. After this weekend we need to try to get together..... I passed a place on Dixie Hwy nor...

No no! Use flint to strike spark; not copper coated zinc penny! Actually, there are various types of flints and cherts, some of which seem to work better than others. I picked up some of mine in the parking lot at Battle in England. Such a practical souvenir. I'm still on need of some flint.... tha...

Do you have a pointer or photos of your forge? did you go with wood/charcoal over propane because it is more period? or what it just more convenient? Ogedei I'll take some more photos tomorrow. The forge is fairly simple and while not conveniently it is technically portable. I got the forge in a ba...

Actually, I have found that style rasp very useful for woodwork over the years. I even purchased an extra one for the woodshop, and well as the one I keep in the household toolbox. Maybe you ended up with a cheap one. I tend to use worn out metalworking files for fire steels; with a good hardening....

My first forged 'tool'
My first real forged thing! ( the other stuff has just been flattening a 1/4' rod on one end and bending it over for a pin for some chairs I make ) A steel striker for a flint and steel fire starting kit. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r295/ConalOhAirt/steelstriker.jpg I might hit a few spots w...

Annealing something
It's hot and I do not really want to build a fire in my forge today. When annealing is even a little bit of a red glow going to make a difference? Is some better than none? or is it an all or nothing kinda thing? My only other heat source is a little propane torch ( your basic homeowner version ) an...

Saw off the remaining handle below the head... place over hardie hole... place a thick steel rod or dull chisel on top of wood and give it a few whacks with a hammer. Of course just about the time I get really frustrated and ask it finally comes out. Drilled a few more holes to remove even more woo...

Broken hammer handle ( NOW REMOVED - THANKS ANYWAY )
I've got a nice sized cross peen hammer with a broken off handle. (EDIT oops... it was not a cross peen, just a standard small sledge hammer...I was confusing it with another hammer ) Whoever put the last handle on it drove a piece of pipe down into the wood to wedge it in place. That is making this...
