Thank you Everyone ! I really appreciate the discussion and pictures. Realistically, I doubt I would ever competitively Joust. I'm just too damn old (42) and a Type I Diabetic. Which means I heal really slow, and given my job I can't spend time off for injury. I can still fight heavy in the SCA occa...

Thanks guys. I appreciate the responses. Lloyd, I would love to see that pic ! I'm a pretty big guy myself, 6'2" and 240+ buck wild, with about 50 lbs plus in my 3/4's set of plate, so I was thinking I would need a big 16 to 17 hand horse to haul my fat carcass around. We currently have a half ...

Modern Jousting Horses of Choice?

Maybe Jeffery or Lloyd can answer this... Or anyone else feel free. Growing up in a poor workingclass family in the suburbs, I never spent much time around horses except maybe for some poorly scripted Ren Fair jousts where they didn't even wear helms. In the past year however, My wife and daughter h...

As you will Kilkenny, no arguement. But as the original poster is admittedly someone new to armouring, I thought I would bring up an alternative. When My cousins and I started the SCA back in 1986 we thought that leather armour had to be cheaper and easier to make than metal. Not to mention it had t...

This may be an unpopular opinon in this thread, but ............ As expensive as heavy weight leather is, and the huge amount of work/labor needed to shape and then harden the scales or plates, I would consider buying the metal lamellar plates sold here on the forum or on the internet. Less labor ti...

Here is a good link to some information on the Schiavona. There were early forms and "prototypes" in the late 15th Century, but they became much more common in the mid 16th century. While those are far from the most popular "era's" for personas in the SCA, it is definitely within...

Now now, ;)

If your persona is late 15th, thru the 16th century, then baskets are fine. They were not the normal, but they did exist. My favorites are the early Schiavona's.

And no, the Scottish Highlanders did not invent the basket hilt. hehehe ;)

Ryuoko, A bit of advice. At Blackstone Raids 2009, I blew out my MCL and my ACL, in my right knee, in the bridge battle. Beautiful Helm... <bump> One little suggestion. Next time you make one of these, you might consider a different hinge, or maybe grinding the corner off and part of the middle to make a scalloped look. They're a little industrial looking. Or you could hinge them on the inside. Just a random thought. ...

Exchange Visors, How do You do it?

Pretty much what the title says. I'm looking at constructing an SCA style visor for a very nice helm with a historic visor that I purchased in an auction. How do each of you do it? Constructing the visor is no problem. Its more a matter of how do you attach and secure each of the visors, and the oth...

Not sure what your local company is charging you, but you can buy armor producing sizes of 304 and 316 on Ebay.

Check the prices and make sure you include shipping, but I would at least compare the two.

For me, Its usually cheaper to buy the pieces of Ebay.
