What his Grace Gavin said...

Resolene is basically Johnson's acrylic (liquid) floor treatment. When I ran out, that is what I used in the past. For saddles, I use Tan Kote or Saddle Lac, it seems to wear better.

I would caution on using brewers pitch in areas you don't want a tacky surface. It has been my expeirence in using brewers pitch that it stays tacky a long time, and if it is reheated it gets tacky again. It is, after all, tree sap that is slight refined. I believe the rosin they are using is like t...

I know this is off topic, but... When I was working full time as a FF, we had leather helmets, actually they have been around quite a while. I am surprised that MSA (Mine Safety Appliances), who bought Cairn's in 2000, allowed that much of video out to the public. When I joined as a volunteer in 197...

Slight derail... The best advice someone told me that the best thing to do is have one or the other (Hammer or form) be hard and the other soft. Like a rawhide hammer and a steel dish or a steel hammer and a wooden dish. The technique works well. As for Rawhides hammers, I cannot recommend them enou...

I have to agree with Schreiber about the book. When I first started I bought it, it opened my eyes to forming ideas and techniques, but, Schreiber is right, for every technique, there are several ways to do it differently. The book does stimulate thinking though. I also hooked up with others in my a...

I have read alot of good things on this thread. Good discussion thus far. Let me begin this with a disclaimer; I hope this is not taken the wrong way and that it is not meant in malice. I have been in the SCA something like 3 years now, I come from a reenactment background (Rev War to WWII) where I ...

In my experience, tearing is just part of the learning curve. I did not get many nice pieces in my first several months of learning, but as time goes by, you learn hammer control and just how far you can stretch a piece until it tears or is unusable. If there is someone near you who does armouring, ...

WHat type of stitch are you using? My demi's are saddle stitched with cross stitching and they do not seem to stretch. Then again I use waxed linen thread too. Most artificial sinew that is easily available is nylon, when it heats up it stretches. Not sure what the industry standard is for nylon, pe...

Does anyone have info on storage at Pennsic? I've used the local "Store-Mores" and they seemed a bit pricey, but I've heard that there is storage available with the Coopers. Any help would be great. Still didn't get a trailer yet ? Lowes and HD had some decent deals on enclosed trailers a...
