I think the ridge in that Geman style ecranche shield are there for strength. Due to it concave bend. I think I remeber the shield you were talking about and am thinking along the same lines as Irish and Naill, either would work, does it fit your persona? Just about any shape can be done with alumin...

Good discussion so far and well thought out. I have done reproduction leatherwork from the 18th and 19th centuries for over 20 years now. My main forte is 19th century but I have done a fair amount for 18th century enthusiasts. My slant on any business is that you can never turn a profit buying your...

The classes in my area are not inexpensive. For the price of the classes here, and after buying the required non supplied safety equipment, I woould have had enough money into it to buy my own MIG. I did not take the class. I agree with Avadon as welders in general go. If you find a guy in your area...

I have this one : 94847-9VGA, it is the one they first came out with, I gather it is bigger. My experience with it is 1) the dies were not centered on the hammer shaft, so I needed to tweak that a bit so it was lined up. 2) the adjustment system is a bit wonky and takes a while to get used to it. 3)...

Not necessarily. Harbor freight sells the discs with an adaptor kit to hold them for under I think $10, they have 1/4 shafts so they will fit in your standard drill. I like my air die grinder though...

Considering the price of wood today, the shield boss, and other materials; you are probably not too far off. I know years ago when my parents owned a craft business the factor was 4x materials for total cost. That may have changed...YMMV. The only deciding factor would be where you price your time.....

My first spun top starter helm rang also. We used a magnet (large donut magnet) up in the crown. It worked pretty good. The second one I got had the same problem AJ's had, and that was the solution we used also. Haven't had a helm that rang since I got away from spun tops though.

I have a football girdle with the hex pads on the hips. They don't look like much because they are about .25" thick, but, they are thin enough that they fit anywhere and surprisingly dampen blows when they are struck. For me, I wish the pads were a liitle larger, but, they do work well.
