Can you laminate two 8 oz pieces to make up the difference? I use Weaver's leather in Ohio, never got a bad hide from them yet.

just thought of something after I posted...

What we did in our ACW group was buy a nail/candy keg and put a modern water cooler inside and used a wooden tap on the outside. It necessitated it being vertical instead of horizonally though...

Check with Jas. Townsend & Co. They sell new made barrels for storing water in, or they also sell brewers pitch which with you may be able to coat the barrels you found. It will probably require you taking the barrel apart to get it all coated though...

I use abrasive cord to sharpen my edge bevelers. The biggest problem, other than finding it locally, is that the stuff I have only works on #3 and larger bevelers. Stitch groover, I always buy new blades...I can never get them decently sharp. For the $1-2, it was worth buying new there... of course ...

second on the use of batting. Even though there will be some nay sayers...I sewed channels in my helmet liner and just stuffing them was not easy, I cannot imagine what stuffing an aketon would be like...

I have used them in the past for metal forming other than armor, but I prefer my weighted garland rawhide. Hardly any deformation and good transmission of force.

What I did when I made the shields of late was buy 4' x 8' sheets of plywood. If you buy them at HD or Lowe's they will rip them in half or in smaller pieces for you. When I had a fullsized pick up I just did it myself. What I did was make 3- 32"x24" heater shields from one piece of 4'x8'....
