When I helped my friend work on his Valsgaard kit from Zwiehammer, we got really tired of setting rivets by hand so... I bought a cheap impact hammer at HF: m It does not come with a rivet head, but does come with the pointed tool head. I cut it off, ground out a rivet dimple in it and did a crappy ...

Are you trying to create a pattern yourself, or are you trying to resize an existing pattern? The idea of making a foam liner first is a great one. Halberd suggested using aluminum foil and molding it to fit. I have tried this when I repadded my bascinet and it got me close enough that I did not was...

I concur somewhat with the HF ASO thoughts. I have two, One was a trade, one was a gift. One has a somewhat hard face, the other one is soft. The older one has a harder face than the newest one. I like the football and tear drop dollies. I cannot make those from scratch for the price they charge. Th...

If you need patterns: m Matt Amt (on here) developed this site and the patterns work. Plus he worked out all the nuances to make building one easier. It still is not a cake walk however ( mine is in parts in my shop!) Also: m You will have to register to post or read most of the site, however, Roman...

What you're likely to find at Lowes/Home Depot is probably a 3 foot section of black iron pipe to use as a handle. I don't have the diameter you'd need handy, but you should be able to measure the end of your shear and figure out what pipe size you need. This will be A LOT cheaper than a Beverly re...

I bought a flat-ring titanium aventail for a custom helm this summer. I have owned sets of these for well over 4 years and I noticed that this this part o...

From what I was taught:
Dishing/doming stretches the metal from the center out and thins the metal at many points
and
raising/shrinking compresses the metal in the middle, but thins it out at the edges.
This is the best forum I have found for the technical details for metal working:

You could try here:
http://www.larp.com/legioxx/helmets.html
Matt Amt also posts on the archive here. He may have so insight into constructing helms.
You could also try here:
http://www.romanarmytalk.com/rat/index.php
You will have to register to see the neat stuff and to post, but they are a great resource.
cheers!
