For foot combat, I would choose an open faced helm. For mounted with lances I would use a visored helm.

The wraps cover all the SCA marshallate areas.

However, I have seen it as a common misconception that these don't cover the back because of the small gap where they buckle.
And, I would take this over a kidney belt any day protection wise!

It's a groovy helm, but I got one with a visor on it. Like most of the stuff I have, it's a sale to get me by, and if I "get by" before it sells I just keep them.

This has SCA legal kidney protection. It has never failed an inspection when worn alone. It covers on me all but about 4 inches of area on the back.
