If having a sense of humor means not being knightly, then I guess I'll never be a knight. I suppose it also means I'm ignoble and fear having my skill and comportment judged by my peers and I don't take my training seriously. Who knew having a sense of humor was so fraught? I guess I should call my ...

Not that I am against the noble plastics kozane. I think they are great. I haven't seen a dou made from them (yet) that lives up to thier potential. The kozane are not a DIY kit. They are one ingredient in a recipe. You still have to make ushiro-ita, waka-ita, etc.. Enough kozane to do a complete d...

Re: Jinbaori
Audax, As usual, you have good advise. I had considered some form of coverage for elbows , but there a couple of silly issues involved, associated with looks and historical/cultural feasibility. A Jingasa is usually associated with "Ashigaru", the lowest rank of the samurai, (according to some sour...

Rowan, I agree with you for the most part but I have to say that when I get my $620 Albion Sheriff, it isn't getting used for fencing or training. It will ride at my side and be drawn only for the Zombie Apocalypse or something similarly dire. My cheap but adequate MRL's will get used up in training...

What about Japanese lamellar? Scroll down here to Effingham kozane m I use the pewter auks and even in bright sunlight, up close and personal people can't tell it's plastic. The kozane look like lacquered metal. I find my lamellar plenty protective. Get the basic jingasa, so you can start fighting a...

The effigy of Don Bernaldo Guillen de Entenza who dies in 1237 shows a pair of early greaves. He may have died in 1237, but his effigy is clearly 14th century. Erik So if he's from around 1300, but most likely a few years earlier, it seems he'd be appropriate for Geoffroi's purposes. Not to mention...

According to Oakeshott's "Archaeology of Weapons" the 'true' dagger grew out of the short sax. Many (if not most) were single-edged (like a modern utility knife) until late in the 13th c. when the double-edged spike became more popular. BTW, if you're interested in Outremer, I saw a very interestin...

Alrighty, since I posed the question, I feel I should weigh in on the subject. I want to look as period as possible while remaining as competitive as possible. I originally bought a great helm to fight in, since it would have been appropriate and gave an authentic look. Problem was, I couldn't see o...

I admit that my prowess in stick-tag would probably increase if I stopped wearing so much steel. But looking good is more important to me than winning at stick-tag, especially at public demos. After all, who is the crowd more likely to remember: the guy in the poly-cotton tabard and hockey gear who...

Whitebat Armory review
This will be an easy review to write: fast service, good communication, a helm that looks right and fits right. It's even built to have a drape added.
It's good looking, well built helm for an excellent price. Easy transaction, too.

How do the people on this forum go about the above? Do you emphasize one or the other and what compromises do you make because of this emphasis? How much does appearance matter to you, are you working on making your kit look appropriate to your persona or do you just go for a medievalish feel? Feel ...

Heh, thanks Matt. That'll really help. dheisey, I had considered the heat factor, I just like the look of the Knotwolf drapes and thought I'd inquire so I'd have the option. But since I've got a mail coif I can cut down, I'll probably do that. I't s a good look, too. I was able to get the stop sign ...

mail drape for a conical
Greetings all, I just bought this helmet and plan to add a drape to it. My questions are where to get a premade riveted drape and how to modify a butted mail coif I already have to make a drape while I save for the riveted drape. Also I'd be interested in any ideas or tips on making a leather drape ...
