When I was looking to get a Norman I contacted James River Armory, but I didn't buy one because I didn't like the way the helm looked in the pictures.
But that looks great! And now I feel like a heel.
And I'm still looking to buy a Norman or a Phrygian...what did this hat cost?

Congrats Lord Marc on the accolade, watching the video of you fighting bastard sword vs s/s is awesome. What are you using for a cross and pommel on your sword? It looks like hose for the crossguard, I have no idea what your pommel is. Saburou, I saw one of your fights at Mudthaw, you're no slouch e...

I'd imagine you could drill a hole at the end of each line of the cross, then use a rotary tool to cut off the material inbetween the holes and then clean & square the ends with a file.

It'll be over a tunic, going for the early 12th century Italo-Norman look. If I go with aluminum, it'll be anodized or etched, so it won't look like aluminum at all.

Once finals are over this week, I'll be itching to practice. Don't worry, I'll be in contact.

Lamellar Material

I'm between purchasing stainless lamellar from WMA or anodized aluminum from eldesar.com. The only real difference I could think of is that the aluminum might scratch easier, but since it is thicker it might damage the lacing less. I'd imagine that the weight would be similar, since the stainless wo...

I eventually plan to get a mail shirt as well but I'm gonna save up for some welded Ti. Welded titanium would be awesome, but it's way pricey - I'm still a student. Plus, I was quoted a welded stainless short-sleeved hauberk at around $800 from Atlanta Armory, I'd expect to pay loads more for Ti. A...

Audax,
Nice look.
For myself I'm imagining something similar, except lamellar instead of scale and eventually I'd like to put a maille shirt under it.
I just got a quote from Atlanta Armory and Sir Theo (at eldesar.com).

Acceptable time period for Acre is 1000-1500 AD.
I'm shooting for around 1100.
Half of my real family is Sicilian, so I'd be fine with claiming a southern Italian origin.

Well, my idea is to portray (at least while in armor) the kit of a Norman in the Holy Land around this time period. I came to this because the group I'm part of, Kingdom of Acre, is supposed to be representative of a crusader kingdom...hence the name. Thanks for all of your help, keep it coming! Adam

Nicolle, David. The Normans. New York: Osprey, 1987. 41.

The book cites as follows:
"carved relief, very early 12th cent., north door of Church of St. Nicholas, Bari."

Armor of Outremer c. 1100

So my Osprey "The Normans" book shows a picture of armor c. 1100. There are Normans on crusade wearing lamellar over a hauberk. Are there other sources for this? The book shows what appears to be leather, steel, and brass lamellar, but states that the brass was most likely decorative. Woul...

I've never heard the buzz plate solution, but it makes sense. Sounds similar to what I've heard, which is to peen a brass rivet in the helm, but give it a little room to vibrate. I'd assume that the location of the source of the ringing is where you'd want the rivet/buzz plate. What type of helm is ...

If I order just the articulated knees, are they made to size? Or are they standard and the cuisses are the custom part? I'm interested in the knees, but they would be for a smaller person.
