Troubles blackening a helm

This weekend I set about to fix up a helm which once-upon-a-time had been blackened. I stripped the rust and most of the old black finish off the helm with a fine wire wheel, cleaned the surface with lacquer thinner, then followed the instructions on the bottle. The stuff is called "Black Magic...

Ok, not to derail the thread.. but what are those snazzy faux-finger style gauntlets made out of? Blackened steel or a plastic? I LOVE the enclosed thumb design. They certainly look quite comfortable. They are made of blackened hardened steel. lol, I don't think plastic that thin would be any more ...

I've had them for two years, I've only had to replace the stiching on one side of one thumb once. That's it.
They were made and strapped by Jeff Wasson.

Don't use regular stain on skin-on rattan, it doesn't work so well.
Try gel stains.

I recently got similar news from a doctor, but it was about my sword-wrist. He called it "carpal radial subluxation" (sp?) Pretty much, he told me to very very slowly try to strengthen it while babying it to some extent. When it came to fighting, it means that I switched hands when using s...

This is what I did on a recent shield, the results were good: 1)Drill 1/8" holes at regular intervals approx 1.5" in from edge. 2)Attach and paint canvas cover. 3)Apply car door edging around shield. 4)Over the car door edging, put on the smallest heater hose you can find. Crazy glue the h...

The gladiator-looking guy in that pic is Sir Balin of the East (I don't know his full medieval name). No, he isn't wearing any cuisses. In fact, he isn't really wearing anything on his torso either, though you can't see that behind his shield. That is his Pennsic kit. Normally I think he wears a 14t...

Last year, I posted a video on myspace of my Nephew and another young kid from here "going at it old school" in my back yard. They had been talking smack to each other all day, so I told them to suit up or shut up. They both had a blast, and feel like it was a great test of combat and lea...

Before the 8 month purge Vitus had started a thread on how he was fixing his personal shield. I think it was in similar shape to yours. Perhaps that could be of some use.

A whitetail deer perhaps?
I've been told that my grandfather used to hunt whitetail with a .22 and go for headshots. Seems weird to me, but that was the story.

If you want it to come off fast and easy, and don't care if it needs an occassional repair, try this: Find the dimensions of your shield. Cut out a piece of canvas the shape of your shield, but a few inches (6?) larger in both directions. Now, sew a tube around the entire edge, leaving an opening an...

As a five foot tall person, I would not fight with a 36" sword. Why? As a 5' 10" person, I don't fight with a 36" sword, I use a 34.5" sword. It's a lot faster for me. Even if you think of yourself as a leg-target-only person (which is kinda silly), you'll probably want the speed...

The sugar loaf is nice. With a refined nasal and a more exciting breathe pattern it could be very cool.
And I agree with Magnus, the top bar of the grilled bascinet would look better rivetted down or better yet on a hinge.
I really like the shape of your center-point bascinets.
