That would likely ruin the leather strapping.

Hmm...well if Carlos can pass as a crusader helm, it'll probably be easier than trying to make the spangen kit look distinctly Norman.

If it's not too late I'd like to change my order to a Frankenhelm kit.
What size bits did you use to make the dogbone breaths?

P.S.- What sort of period might the Carlos helm be appropriate for? That might affect my choice.

lol I'm put under for a few hours and the Archive decides to delete my thread!
Halberds, did we hit the 6 kit mark yet for the spangen kit?
I can re-start the thread later if need be.
I would really like to purchase that. I think it would look awesome with a spiffed-up cross.

I had noticed that the leather was easier to cut along one side of the vambraces, but I hadn't really thought that it would make them softer. They've gotten a little stiffer, but I still might pad them or splint them, I guess I'll wear them a few times and see how it goes. They were dyed with Tandy ...

Yeah I'll try and remember to take more progress pics, rather than less.
This just occurred to me though, when I take the (mostly dry) leather out of the oven to put on the glue, so I just paint on a single layer and stick it back in the oven?

Thanks for the tips, I didn't realize that the leather would get so hard that I would need to hinge it. Also the picture really helps with the articulation, now I'm thinking I'll leave the vambrace longer, keep it inside the cop, and use a single central strap to hold it in. Audax, I'm using 13-15 o...

If I stare at it long enough will it turn into armor?-it did

Ok, so I have the leather and the cops, some rudimentary patterns, and an idea of how I want to harden it. http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s27/skywlker85/armormess2.jpg So now my questions are about how I've messed up the pattern for the vambrace. The greaves one I'm happy with, but i'm unsure of...

Re-doing kit...leather question

Ok...if I'm going to harden the leather by wetting it, forming it and drying it in the oven, is it necessary to use the armor bend leather, or will 13-15 oz saddle skirting be sufficient?

Is the question you're asking related to where to attach the elbow cops ? Sorry, but I'm just not following.... Pretty much. I think it is better to have the opening of the vambraces on the inside of the arm. I'm not sure if this answers your question. As far as attaching them to the cops, one strap down center will be less cumbersome. I think it's hard to do this in words. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the insi...

Re-doing kit--new leather question!

So it looks like I'm going to be putting together a simple set of leather vambraces with fanless cops and probably buying a set of splinted legs and making my own greaves (or getting them made locally). My questions are: On the vambraces, I'm planning to do some wet-forming, hopefully heating it to ...

I've held one of those tips in the picture (or at least something that looks remarkably alike) and I don't recall it squishing enough to be used as a thrusting tip.
Something made in its image specifically for a SCA spear though....that could be cool.

Re: Looking for someone who can answer this physics question

If we consider all other variables to be the same (force of blow, length of blade, movement of target, etc.) how much harder will 1-1/2" ball = 8oz on the tip of a 3' sword hit when compared to a 1" ball = 2.37oz on the tip of a 3' sword? Hmmm....these are what came to mind. Which is most...

We have filmed the treb working and can see quite a flex in the arm. We figured hard wood would have no flex in it and as such would snap when it came to a stop. Do you have footage of the failure? Also I suppose that where your trebuchet "brakes" at the end of the throw matters. One poss...

If I'm understanding you correctly you have a "traction" trebuchet. I don't know why though you'd want the arm to be flexible. Any reasonably strong wood should work, depending on construction techniques, any hardwood would be fine. On my last one (5.5' axle height, 10' tall at tip of arm)...

My experience is similar to Baron Alejandro's. The thumbs on my gauntlets are solidly attatched to the gauntlet (rivets, not a leather strap) and have an enclosed tip. I hold onto my polearm with my thumb over my fingers and I haven't had an issue.
So yes, such gauntlets do exist.
