Ah yes. On this side of the planet, the weekend is nearly over.
It'd be only halfway through there I suppose.

Re: Need Pics, Late 14th, early 15th cent hinges
So here are some sketches. Bear in mind that 'sketch' word. They aren't all to the same scale, and there isn't even a scale presented beside any of them. Their purpose was to serve as a reference so that when i wanted to make one, I would know where in my catalogue of images to look to see the origi...

I have a couple of pages of sketches I have made of hinges from extant armour - however hey start from about 1440.
If you're still interested though, I can scan and upload.

Re: Need Pics, Late 14th, early 15th cent hinges
The problem with that is the same as with the lining idea. If there was a steel strip of reinforce, would not the length of the rivet shanks show it? Unless the band was removed during use life or soon thereafter, with the holes filled at the same time hence the ages look. I used an applied strip of...

Re: Need Pics, Late 14th, early 15th cent hinges
What surprises me more than the apparently needless rivets is the lack of a roll around the cuff. I suppose though that if the canon finished far enough up the arm, it wouldn't dig into the hand, meaning the only other issue would be the reduction in strength from not having as much three dimensiona...

Re: Wallace Coll A21 pauldrons?
Still seems fine to me. In terms of my pattern I only did the biggest plate - with a mind to patterning the other plates off that one when it was made to shape. I thought it would all fit better that way. I'd be interested to see any pauldron patterns you could take a snap of. Especially if there's ...

Re: Need Pics, Late 14th, early 15th cent hinges
It may just have been to look cool. Not likely though - the rivets seem flush on the outside. Unless at one stage there were brass heads on the outside. Some might say this would be redundant decoration as the cuff would be hidden under gauntlets - however we see a few fechtbucher in which the comba...

Re: Wallace Coll A21 pauldrons?
That's all I was hoping for. To be able to see a pattern and the finished piece will help to visualise how another pattern *might* turn out. I wouldn't really seek to copy the pattern, and it would just be a study, as you say.
Hopefuly you'll get a couple of minutes to take a snap or two.

Re: Need Pics, Late 14th, early 15th cent hinges
There is no roll on the lower canon around thw wrist. What's with that? Also with the wrist...what's with the line of arming nails? The hole in the fan - would that have been for attaching one of those enormous elbow guards seen so often on late 15thC armours? The more I look at this, the more I thi...

Re: German gothic breast plate ( in progress)
But bear in mind that sallets are a diverse and varied breed. There are many sallets to choose from. Or a great bascinet. Or if you change your mind and decide this is more of an Italian export or Italian harness, you could have an armet or barbute. Good work for a first try. You might find, if you ...

Re: Froissarts Chronicles arm harness
The problem with that is the cop would slip down the arm if not connected to something that caqnnot, unless the strap was so tight as to hold it there which would likely restrict circulation, and most certainly limit flexion of the elbow.

Ah! I know what you mean with regards to looking less like a head now. Be it turning pin or staple and pin, the slot would serve equally well. Re: Designing a great bascinets from Paulus Kal
I was aware of the gothaer manuscript, however I don't think that emulating a helm from that manuscript would be quite fitting, considering the style from gothaer is most definitely in the Kastenbrust style, rather than the Italian export/protogothic seen in the 1459 fechtbuch. I know there are one ...

Re: Designing a great bascinets from Paulus Kal
The bowl of the helm needs to look less like a head? I would have argued that making the skull bigger and the neck narrower, and making the chin more prominent would make it look more like a head. It is important to note, however, that although the neck fits closely, there is still plenty of clearan...

Very interesting to see Mac. Different pivots for visor and bevor - obviously I had not thought of that, but makes perfect sense. Re: Designing a great bascinets from Paulus Kal
Ah, but you see....in Paulus Kal he shows his jousters in sallets and kettle hats, his spear, sword and dagger combat in the same (actually only in sallets), then a new section starts with pollaxes, and only here in this pollaxe sections are seen these great bascinets. So the intent with these helms...

Designing a great bascinets from Paulus Kal
Hi all, I think that great bascinets are under represented in the modern armourfraternity. Additionally, I think that of those great bascinets that people do wear, the great majority of them are quite similar in style. All that being said, I'm not actually all that enamoured with the helm, but I do ...

Re: Crafting a Breastplate: A Newb's First Post
It is not necessarily true that the people that make breastplates already know how. I had no idea what I was doing and I ended up with a reasonably breastplate shaped object on the very first try. It is even possible, by being clever or lucky (I am neither so I don't know how this happened), to make...

Hi Wade, Si think I know exactly what you mean with regards to the cop being too deep. The piece of steel I used to cut the cop halves from was about 1/4-3/8" narrower than the pattern, so I had to bring the upper and lower points in accordingly. I didn't think it mattered too much but now that I co...

Re: failing miserably to articulate a knee - any help?
Thanks for the tips so far. Yep, I was aware that the lames would be dished somewhat. That's why I said that a couple of times in the OP. Pitbull, that is an interesting idea. What I fear might happen through doing that though is the lames would end up bulged in the wrong place so that when flexed, ...

Re: failing miserably to articulate a knee - any help?
I may have fixed it. Everyone can stop panicking. My problem was that I was moving the articulation points by virtue of pinching the lame to the cop with fingers/thumbs. I got a hold of some tiny, but very strong magnets, each about half the size of a pea. I used these to 'pin' the cardboard lame to...

failing miserably to articulate a knee - any help?
Hi all, I need a little help. I can't seem to make a template for a knee cop that has minimal gap and looks good. My camera is kaput so this will not be made any easier. There's another point - polishing. On my last hinges, with all those sharp corners, I had it in my head that it would be too hard to polish them when done, so I tried to get a good finish on the steel before I did anything else, then it would just need a quick touchup when the hinge was together.
