Mac, as always, absolutely brilliant. Do the faces of the clamp not scar the surface of the leaves at all? I imagine that hinge was either from the experiments&misc box, unless you were going for the 'dug it out of the Thames' look. I'll try this out. It will be made even easier by the fact my machi...

Re: BEG Improv and Newbie tools on the cheap.
If you go and buy a $5 pair of jeans from the op shop, you can use the legs and some zip ties together with some sand to make shot bags. I got a dishing stump by raiding a site where some tree surgeons had been but had not thrown all the logs in the chipper. Probably would have given them to me anyw...

Re: Looking to buy hinges
I once got a quote for making a set of dies that would punch out a hinge blank that would have ended up looking like the first hinge pic that Mac posted. I was shocked to hear it would cost 370GBP to have it made. For that price, I could have had hundreds of blanks lasercut, sold the excess, and mad...

Mac, it is always a joy to see pictures of your work, even if it be from the 'Reject & Misc' pile. Always good to see the hardware of the masters too. Re: Looking to buy hinges
Hi Mac, Thanks for the help. With regards to the pins, I used the same rod to bend the stock around to make the knuckles as I did to make the pins from (does that make any sense?). I thought this would be a Good Thing as it meant the pin and knuckle would fit snug. How much narrower should the pin b...

Re: Looking to buy hinges
Hi Mac, Yep, I coulda guessed what you'd say, and I will likely end up making them to save mulah. When you say tapered knuckles, do you mean tapered from the body of the hinge to the extremity of the knuckle? I've spent time looking at many extant and depicted hinges, and they all appear to have 90 ...

Re: X-post - WTB hinges
Ultimately I think I would need 12 '3 pointers' and 12 '2 pointers', of a size suitable for vambraces. Depending on the cost though, I may just make them instead.
Material could be brass or mild steel, 18g.

Looks to be a good start. I like the elbows. From what I can tell of looking at originals, it seems to be that the upper definitely is as close to gutter shape as makes no difference. Not sure about the lower though. Also, as far as I'm aware, there is no keyhole for the hand protection. They are fi...

I know I can make hinges. I have done it and will do it again. It is not terribly difficult, but at this early stage of my hinge making learning curve, it takes a while per hinge. Having gone to the effort of making articulated gauntlets from damascus steel, I think the community would greatly appreciate many more photos. Closeups, when worn, from far away, etcetera etcetera.

Seconded, Mac! Sometimes it is not possible to look the part and be safe at the same time. Take bargrills for example. But it is possible to look the part, and then be safe in short order. Oh and Mac, thanks for that other advice. I must have skimmed over the earlier part where you mention using gre...

Re: anyone have experience making scabbards?
For an historically correct (or at least, correcter) scabbard, how much wider than the blade shoudl the slats be? What I'm asking is, how much wood/wood contact does there need to be for a good glue line? Or am I over engineering it, and one applies the leather cover to hold the slats in place? If s...

All this talk of refacing, case hardening and whatnot of anvils is very interesting. I investigated, and found that these anvils have a face hardness of about 45 rockwell.

What would you do with an anvil like this?
Hi all, I hope to be getting an anvil such as the one pictured. It will be my first. It is 50kg (110lb), cast steel. Either that or a 75kg version of the same. I was advised by someone that it would be wise to grind one edge of the face, in two parts so it has two different radii. As it is, the edge...

Olivier, your pauldrons look very handsome. Would you care to share a sketch of the pattern of these beasts? I agree the pattern in that old publication is a little off. There are a number of problems with it, and indicate the author made the sketches based the pattern on looking at an extant piece,...

I don't think these are for the purposes of heraldry, bu there are a number of tabbardy things worn in this edition of the Gladiatoria fechtbuch:

I agree with things already said and have another point. When the knee is straight, the centre point of the lame should only just stick out from the centre point of the knee cop. If you do this, the lames are almost invisible when the knee is straight, and appear from nowhere when the knee bends. Dave
