I think the idea here is that the paste does the etching.
I might be misunderstanding though.

Re: First Gothic Harnisch in pictures
I had promised myself that on this harness, I would not do inner canons to make the lower part of the vambrace enclose. However, yesterday I found myself working on some and all too many hours later, they are at the stage they are now. I found the gentle curves of the inner plate fairly easy, which ...

That's kinda good, but not quite the outcome I was hoping for.
I was thinking more along the lines of outside, everyday shoes, that anyone would just wear around the traps.

15thC shoes - don't shoot me
Hi all, I was thinking about shoes recently, and I wondered, just maybe, if there is any evidence for making the upper part of shoes out of cloth, like heavy canvas or some other stout fabric instead of universally being leather. I'm talking 15thC Europe here. If there's not, as in, there's evidence...

Thanks Ckanite. I wanted to have them a bit more flutey in the body of the elbows, but my stake won't reach in there. Hi Wade, I ammended my post accordingly. Credit paid where credit's due. Thanks for the tip re-cutting the slots. How much slot per lame? I was guessing something like 1/4" or s...

A very little progress: upper canons of the arm harness. Fluted. My converging flutes seem to be improving a little, and the apexes of the chevrons almost line up properly. http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m98/dg2clarke/armour/P8310102.jpg http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m98/dg2clarke/armour/P8...

strapped/hanging/floating Gothic arms
Hi all. A quick question or two about later German arm harnesses which look like this: m but instead of having each component individually pointed to the arming garment....the bits are riveted to a strap, so essentially the whole kit and kaboodle hangs from the spaudler. I can understand how in flex...

Re: First Gothic Harnisch in pictures
I got to work on it some more yesterday. My original intention was to do some really nice full Gothic arms and pauldrons. I still will, however for the sake of expediancy and learning opportunity I decided to go with a Gothic splinted arm defence with spaudlers and besagews. I took a pattern of Wade...

More work today. I got the other elbow to the same stage as the first, and it took nearly half an hour less. Then after looking at many effigies and toying with the idea of different ways to flute them, I went with the minimalistic approach. Mostly as I want this haness wearable as soon as possible....

where the gauntlets on left and right have a curved row of rivets on the cuff, parhaps to hold a glove in place. Might we conject that the cuff is enclosed?

Hi all,

Re: First Gothic Harnisch in pictures
Hinges can be a bit dreary to see a lot of, I think. I had templated a pattern, but had received Sound Advice to cut a template out of steel, a ...

Re: First foray into Gothic hinges
Sean, When using the angle grinder, I would cut from barrel to back, and leave a mm or two uncut, then snap the last bit off. First foray into Gothic hinges
On my first arm harness, I used piano hinge. While it worked to an extent, it was a long way from looking good, and was not at all historical. I thought it was time I bit the bullet and tried to make some hinges for my Gothic harness. I wanted something that was a little different to what most peopl...

What spring steel do I want for armour?
So there's been a little talk of spring steel lately. So far I've made all my armour from mild steel, hot and cold rolled. But eventualy I'd like to use spring. So, the question is, what sort of spring steel should I get? I see 1050 bandied around a bit, and earlier this evening I saw 4120 or someth...

In this picture is something I've not seen (read: noticed) before: m At the distal end of the inner lower canon are distinct lines in the surface ans subtle, but abrupt changed in the angle of the outline. There are also a couple of arming nails near those lines. It seems to be...that...there are so...
