odds

As Robert the Wardog commented to me, the battle was an excellent example of why you need 3 to 1 odds to attack a fortification.

But it was much much better than the town battle, which was the dumbest scenario I or any of half a dozen 20+year fighters had ever experienced.

glue not wax

Doing some tests recently, I tried a weak carpenter's glue/water mix, brushing the inside and outside with it until it was more or less soaked. Then cold formed and dried, it came out very very rigid. Much easier than wax, which I've done too. Safer, harder and probably longer lasting. And once it d...

Re: Pennsic Broken Field battle (thoughts)

After reading the description, I am not sure if this is Bannackburn or Stirling Bridge. Mostly, it is Silly. And low on the work to fun ratio on its face. I hope I'm wrong, but most fighters I know come to the war to fight, not to haul haybales around in armor. How that haybale got into my armor, I...

sort of found a ref

My Osprey Norman Knight book shows three thongs coming off the front of the belt onto the scabbard, but doesn't offer any reference to original sources. In making my original swallowtail sword belt, I discovered there's an excellent reason why some of them used three thongs around the scabbard: it i...

Rabbit Glue and color change

Anyone know if rabbit glue will darken or change the color of dyed and antiqued leather? I'd love to use it on this project to harden the leather and to attach the lining materials, but I really don't want the decoration getting any darker than it already is. Yes, I do plan to test it on a scrap, bu...

Oxford (?) Library Scabbard Find--need reference

When I made my first sword belt, I used documentation from the description of a scabbard found in an English college library behind the stacks when they did some renovation. As found, the scabbard had actually been rolled up and sewn into a leather ball. Its worn out bits made up the stuffing of a b...

progress and a discovery/warning

Since I had some trouble getting the yellow dye even on the bauzbands, I tried the advice I read elsewhere on this board about dying the leather while it is wet when it came time last night to dye the top plates. Good news and bad news. Good: The dye is much more even and I really like the color. Ba...

Re: rules addendum

If you die in the battle, you will forfeit all of the ransom items that you have brought for the day. The reason this has been added as an experiment is that in normal SCA combat there is nothing lost if you "die" and we thought it would be most interesting if people were compelled to fight like th...

The first question needs to be: are you doing this because you love it, or for a living? If you're doing this for a living, then the previous comments all make excellent sense. Second Seal of Richard the First

One of the seals of Richard the First clearly shows him in a fully enclosed helm. I think the second seal. Can't find a good pic online, but I recall it from the Osprey book on the normans. It is, in fact, where I got the inspiration for my helm crest.

I believe that's circa 1194.

Interesting changes

Interesting changes--considering that there were only 45 people last year, when 60 were needed, yet the standards have been tightened. In the past, there was no limit on polearm size, for example. And by requiring 14th century kits, I'm out. But on the other hand, there were no single swords or "sin...

Middle rank fighters particularly fall into the trap of thinking that practice is the time to win fights. It is not. Practice is for practicing. I think maybe I'm getting close to the medieval design goal of "too much is never enough" at this point. The main dye colors are on, but no antiquing yet and the yellow ground color isn't on either. NO.
