Re: Traveling light
The best thing I have found, that Losthelm suggested is to get everything out, decide what you really NEED, then pare it down until you have just what you NEED (food, clothing, shelter, armour). Creature comforts come next. After that, whatever you have room for. yeah, what they said... also, if th...

Re: Traveling light
Good Master Woodwose is one to listen to about fitting lots of gear in a small place. How big is that tent you had at GNE Matt? Had all of his stuff, his armor, his wife, AND a St. Bernard. actually, the armor, being steel and somewhat easy to care for, stays outside on an old wool bedroll and unde...

So much I'd like to reply to here, but resisting the urge to do so until I have means other than my phone's tiny virtual keyboard... if late period or just outside sca period is of interest, then for accounts of traveling I recommend Johann Dietz (sp?) Re: newspaper article: SCA brings medieval Europe to Maine
I like your 2-handed rapier. or do you call it an estoc, or an SCA-rapierified longsword? Do you try to imitate any specific style with it? I call it an estoc. Its a 45" darkwood rapier blade, and I made the hilt. I haven't seen anything of how an estoc would have been used, so I kind of default ba...

Yeah, the white backdrop looks really nice; though I'm less impressed with the photographer/reporter guy misspelling my name, my wife's name, misquoting, misinformation (my interest in metalworking did not start with making a mail turtle), that he completely blew off (without calling) the first appo...

Not my best experience with the media, but at least I (being a medievalist from Maine) didn't threaten anyone with an axe.

A bit of a different style hammer of that sort, but same style of head... I found this thing laying in the road out in the middle of nowhere one morning so I picked out up. I ground both faces so I have a large side for raising and a similarly rounded smaller side for getting into tight spots. The b...

the shape of the face is pretty important, the brickhammer shown above is not really what your looking for. Could you please elaborate on this a bit more? Painting the inside is great for rust prevention, but rather annoying when you want to re-blacken the outside with heat and oil.

Tips for leveling of a stump (anvil mount)
Anyone have any tips or advise for cutting a section of log so it will sit squarely on the ground and not rock back and forth? I have a 16" chainsaw and have gotten the ~24" diameter stump so it only has about 1/8" of rocking but can't seem to get better than that. I've been using the edge of the bl...

I kind of wish there were more options out there for finding a set of hunting knives that fit somewhere in the 1400 - 1600 timeframe... a hunting trousse with a relatively large/heavy and wide bladed knife, together in a sheath with a couple smaller knives, and a pricker/poker. Now I probably would ...

Re: Cuir bouilli etuis
I ask this because 1. is the glue vital in the construction? 1. It is certain that some sort of adhesive is used to attach the outer layer of leather. Try as you might, you will not find any stitching on the outside, nor any traces of where stitching might have been "buried" in the leather. This is...

I've found it to be far easier to slash fabric while flat, before sewing pieces together. I use to rotary cu...

I haven't used metal clay, but have seen other people do stuff with it. My main concern is that (from what i have seen) the resulting product is more like cast metal.
Also, would carbon added as you say really get into the steel paricles, or would it just stay between them?

I've also been using something similar to what Louis de Leon posted, but with a less fancy fire box... mine is more of the "brick pile" approach rather than built into a sheet metal box. This has the disadvantage that heat leaks out more through spaces between bricks, and I have to be careful not to...
