Re: Sources for Period Glassware?

Just in the conservation of (manually manufactured) material, would make thinner glass more desirable to the craftsman, and I would guess it would result in a less exspensive product, making it more disireble to the customer. Jason Klien, "Arab Boy", told me he handled a collection of medieval glas...

Re: First Hot Work, Fireproof Dishing Stump?

Here's a raising hammer made out of a bricklayers(?) hammer. I used a $20 4.5" angle grinder to shape the heads. I think I saw the same hammer for $20ish in a store, but I found this one laying in the road on my way home from work one morning last winter. http://mailmaker.tripod.com/shop/rockraising...

Blunt and to the point, but more truth about this could not be said with less words.

And those tools can be made by modifying a hammer and a trailer/ball hitch.

thanks guys, I did end up buying the 350 lb fisher. It is in remarkably good condition. The guy who owned it said he did a little smithing when he was a lot younger, then it pretty much sat on his porch for 40 or so years. After we got it into the back of the car he told me he had something in his b...

There are two lines I want to cut that about an 1/8 of an inch from the edge the length of the belt. I want them to be deep enough to fill with gold leafing. Use a compass. Set it that width and run the sharp point along the leather. If it need to be deeper, follow up with a box cutter knife. I've ...

as the title says, I'm looking for a cheap anvil to do some hot metal pounding on. Something I have long been wondering, is it possible to make a large 'stamp' say the size of the top of the box and use a press and press it into the leather? Anyone try a mix of hay and (screened/sifted) dirt for something like this? I'm thinking that the dirt might not pack down as hard because of the hay, and because of the dirt in the mix arrows would not get as burried into to the hay.
