my understanding of that sort of doublet is that it has a wide the front is an open V shape, and the layer visable on the chest behind it is the undershirt. in the last image there is a long lace going from shoulder to shoulder (really only from one side of the top of the V to the other) to hold it ...

The interesting thing about the reconstruction of this hat is that it is all squares and rectangles with the exception of the head hole. that sounds pretty well defined - sounds like one of those norman-conical things with the bit that extends down over the nose... definately does not sound like anything more enclosed like a bascinet or great helm

And I have never seen the Katzbalger hung from the side or back, always in the front more like a Sax. thats what I'd always thought too, but it tends to get in the way sometimes. the way their sword belts/sashes seem to fit (too me) makes them easy to shift so the sword hangs at the side, back, or ...
