I'm sorry, I must have misunderstood you when you said, "Since the field is the sole province of knights" . I corrected you because no one had made the assertion that the melee field was only for knights. However now that you have ammended your assertion to say "pesantry", yes, you are right, some a...

Well, assuming this is an extension of the Knights and Archery thread, firstly it is not necessary to be a knight just because you are noble. So you could be a noble on the field but not a knight. Secondly, maces are considered a knightly weapon, so they would be allowed in addition to swords, lance...

Cheval: <I>"These are the FACTS: 1) Generally speaking (Bob's wonderful notes to the contrary), nobles did not use archery. 2) By definition then, anyone shooting a bow is presumed to be non-noble 3) Tournaments are argued as being a contest for only those of noble blood. 4) Any battlefield that has...

Well, I think I fully understand both sides of the issue now. I like combat archery. I like the threat of being hit by it. I enjoy the thought of participating in a pretend war instead of a pretend tournament. I don't enjoy tournament combat. But, I agree with your interpretation. If the SCA is supp...

I'm sorry, but I think you've painted yourself into a corner. You say that melee combat is a tournament because of the rules that exist: "How do we know it's a tournament? "techniques and behavior that is un-knightly is STRICTLY PROHIBITED IN THE SCA." Either this is not so, or the rule is blatantly not enforced. My two cents: I don't believe in the "tournament" subscription to our "wars". I can see a definite arguement for saying they are some rich nobleman's replication of war in tournament style, but I like to pretend I'm actually in a life-or-death battle. It's fun. I quit reading this read about a half way through I guess. To me, this is an easy one. Anyone on the field should be a legal target to hit as long as you are following the standard rules of engagment. Yes, you should be able to yield. I had the same problem with my alternating riveted/solid shirt. I solved the problem by adding another row of riveted rings to the front so that it matched up. It requires fairly close scrutiny to catch.
