Cedric: Bar grills may have existed in period, but they are certainly not common for most of the period the SCA covers. Furthermore, in most SCA uses, they are inauthentic. Yes, there are example of later-period helms for the tournament that have bar grills. There is one example of a 14th century ba...

First of all, if you are using mild (i.e. low carbon) steel, you cannot heat treat it to harden it. First it would need to be carburized. Then it can be heat treated. This is called "case hardening". It is a commercially available option, but you would need to call around for quotes. The hard part i...

Hi SCACelt! Don't feel bad - this happens to a lot of SCA folks, especially new ones. Lots of people gravitate to the "ancient" cultures in the SCA, for a variety of reasons. Sometimes people look at the armour of the high middle ages and know that they can never pull off that kind of impression, so...

In about 2 weeks I have a shipment of loose, ready-to-rivet rings and rivets coming in. These rings are 3/8" ID, 18GA, fully flattened, and piereced, ready to accept a "wedge" style rivet. The rivets, of course, are for the same. I intend to sell them in bags of 5000 rings for about $125 (just over ...

What Owen describes is the "SCA" coat of plates, and works great. However, it's difficult to get the plates to overlap as they should using pockets. Authentic coats of plates have the plates riveted to the inside of a jupon of cloth and/or leather. The plates overlap each other in a pattern, which v...

When buying armour, you are paying for skill. I'd pick the most highly skilled armourer.

Make sure, up front, that you agree on what happens if things don't fit to your satisfaction.
