Iron Monger has some very nice Norman Conical helm tops and pre-cut wrapper pieces. You can get all the parts for like $130.

Re: Can air planisher also raise?
I was thinking the same thing. But heat is going to be necessary for raising anyway, so maybe it would be strong enough on hot metal.perhaps if you added heat so the metal was softer.

I have just started working in pure plate armour also. I started out with Alan Baldree's Great Helm pattern. It is not a very historically accurate pattern but if it will go together just like the pattern shows with no adjustment. I found it relatively easy to do. Do you have a set of hammers and st...

Re: Helms of the Third Crusade?
OK, 5 jigsaw blades later, the high-point basinet top has been removed to become a Phrigian helm top: http://i.imgur.com/Wdpy8Ka.jpg I though their slats seemed a little short, myself, but it's hard to say given how tall their dome is. My dome is somewhat shallower so my wrapper will have to be long...

Re: Helms of the Third Crusade?
Kind of like rocking an AK or Mini-14 magazine in place instead of a straight up and down of an AR, in reverse if that makes sense. Or closing a visor, at any rate I can't drop it straight down on my head without hurting my nose. Perfectly. I had a crusader salt shaker once I had to do the same thi...

It's just hard to document them to the 3rd Crusade. Of course, there's nothing to say we can't just be Crusaders about a decade after the 3rd Crusade.Steve most of us have Salt shaker type helms, including Earl Richard. You would be fine if thats what you want

Re: Helms of the Third Crusade?
So what do you think? Can this helm top be chopped off to create a Phrigian style of helm? http://i.imgur.com/pI8NFTg.jpg Now the tediousness of cutting it off. I figure I could add back slats and a face guard to make something like this: http://www.steel-mastery.com/images/products/big/frisian-helm...

Re: Helms of the Third Crusade?
They way I've done the fake coif drape before is to stitch the aventail to a leather band, but rivet the leather band to the helm with the maille attached to the top edge of the band. Then the maille hangs down over the leather band (dyed black to match the helm wrapper).

That's a great idea, Swete!
I saw the one from Hjalmr but at 28" inner circumference I'm afraid it's a touch big for me. It's a great deal.

Re: Helms of the Third Crusade?
Great thread, Ernst, thanks. The more I re-visit this era the more I am experiencing the same sinking feeling I had last time I did this that really any fully-enclosed helm is going to be a stretch for 1192. King Richard is shown wearing one on his seal in 1200, but that's 8 years post date and is p...

Can air planisher also raise?
If you took one of the Harbor Freight air planishing hammer tools and offset a correctly-shaped hammer from the anvil, could you use it for raising?

You could also make a leather coif for the dome of your head, and attach maille to the bottom edge of it to hang out from under your helmet if you would rather not have your entire head covered with maille.

I don't have one of these, but I have one made by one of his apprentices, Robert Mazza (Zannetto). I love it. It's a beautiful replica. I want to fight in one day but I'm afraid to drill holes in it for a liner and I'm afraid of it getting damaged. :) I remember when this batch of great helms was ma...

I'm looking for something in the sub-$200 range. This is going to be a temporary impression and I'm not looking to sink a lot of money into it.What is reasonable? We have many helms in stock and can also build to order.

Re: Looking for reasonbly-priced Norman conical
Man, it just really pisses me off that the fully-developed "salt shaker" or topfhelm didn't make the cut for the third crusade. For the price, I'm strongly considering this anyway: http://www.therionarms.com/reenact/therionarms_c1106.html Looks like I could easily retrofit this to be SCA legal also....

Re: Looking for reasonbly-priced Norman conical
I have an idea. I have a pre-welded stainless steel back-point basinet that I bought years ago from Master Geoffrey. The weld bead needs to be ground down and the helm polished. If I cut off the side wrapper and wear the helm backwards, the dome looks nearly like this one: http://steel-mastery.com/i...

Nice kit.
The gorget and pauldrons don't strike me as 14th century.
If you want to add a coat of plates, ideally you would just wear it over your maille.

Thanks, Sean!
I'm looking for a helm to use for a 3rd crusade Templar impression. I'm open to other styles for this time period also. Just not looking for a top-of-the-line helm as this is going to be a side impression for fun.

Looking for reasonbly-priced Norman conical
Hi,
I'm looking for a reasonbly-priced Norman conical style of helm (not spangen) made for SCA combat use. Should have a grill (obviously) and wrapper (obviously). I will cover the wrapper and grill with maille to look like a coif myself.
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Join the Meridian Crusade!
Like Yehuda said, they are focusing on the 3rd Crusade. Of course, the SCA being what it is, the field will also contain Normans, Romans, Celts, etc. etc. etc., so no one is going to stop you from being a Templar from any time period. But the idea is for people who want to participate to do the 3rd ...

As I said above, they are paperback versions of Wikipedia and Wiki was not around 20 years ago when this mental illness called historical re-enacting, living history, nerdism overtook me. Re: Started work on a Wisby Coat
Unfortunately, Wisby Armour #1 (Type I) has been so thoroughly copied that we have a cookie-cutter look. Perhaps we should pattern based on concept rather than the actual armor. This is what I did with my last one. I made a mannequin of my torso and then patterned a custom coat of plates based on t...

Re: Started work on a Wisby Coat
I think Konstantin is putting too much emphasis on tailoring this style of coat of plates to fit your body. The example you linked to, Aaryq, is the Wisby #1, a Type I coat of plates (from Thordeman). These kinds of coats of plates are not very form fitting. They are virtually barrel staves of steel...

Re: Started work on a Wisby Coat
I overlap my plates like an inch or so, as I recall. http://forth-armoury.com/photo_gallery/coat_of_plates/cop.htm Canvas should work just fine for the jupon. Be careful when peening the rivets - if they cock sideways the head will cut the jupon and then you get to start all over. All of the plates ...

Re: What to point maille chausses to?
I like the idea of the lace-on chausses, especially since they require less tailoring, and it should make it easier to kneel. But I'm afraid that you would have to bind them like crazy to get them to stay on and not droop. Plus they look like a real pain to try and put on by yourself. The pourpoint ...

Re: Helms of the Third Crusade?
Dating for such helms as early as the Third Crusade (1189-1192) is borderline. I agree the flat-topped "face helms" are pushing it for the Third Crusade. The rounded-top style is what I had in mind. It looks like hemispherical plain or fluted is a good bet. Is there a modern name for that style of ...
