Leather strap with buckles for the forearm, and a leather handle for the hand.
This should give you some ideas:

If you are in a pinch for buckles you can buy a cheap belt at a thrift store and scavenge the buckle.

Re: another on the topic of gambesons
Unfortunately, I was one of the proponents of that theory, that arming garments may have been less-stuffed or not stuffed and that quilting layers of fabric was all that was needed. However, after way more research, I have changed my mind. I think that a) they were absolutely padded (just not the w...

Re: another on the topic of gambesons
Brian Goering's gambeson was very well fitted as I recall, with integral mittens. It was very nice. Also, there is some thought that perhaps maille garments were in fact lined. Thordeman makes this suggestion for the purpose of brass rings in the Wisby finds. When I was at the Royal Armoury at Leeds...

my shield is strapped for my arm, not my arm with an elbow. i also dont see the need to cover something that is already perfectly safe. so, for me, its easier and safer since my shield fits perfectly as is. Do you have any documentation of people of the time period of your persona doing this? Or is...

You can figure 1000-2000 rings.
The good news is if you don't have enough you can easily buy more and keep going.

Like Mac said, modern machinery can be very useful for making modern armour. But it always leaves its mark.

Re: Why do so many people choose a 14th century persona?
14th century knightly harness is about the limit of what your average SCAdian can afford. Once you get into the 15th century and beyond, you are talking about a fitted suit of white harness, and that gets expensive in a hurry. The 14th century also has enough rigid armour to be effective for SCA com...

Re: Wanted: piece of brass rod to make a vervelle.
Hey Aelric, Sadly, they quoted me about $25 for a 6" piece of 3/8" rod, which is about what I'd pay for a 6 foot segment from Mcmaster. They said if I walked in the store it would only cost me $4. Mark, I'll take you up on that. I'll send you some cash for the rod and the shipping. I'll send you a P...

Wanted: piece of brass rod to make a vervelle.
I need to make a replacement vervelle for a helm.
I need a piece of brass rod about 3/8" in diameter (bigger is OK) and maybe 4" long to chuck up in the drill press.
Anyone willing to sell me some? I don't want to shell out $28 for a 6-foot length from McMaster Carr.

Re: Air compressor question.
The most important metric is CFM @ PSI This means that the compressor can sustain X cubic feet per minute @ Y pounds per square inch. Your need will be determined by your most hungry air tool. The tool will tell you the required CFM @PSI. Generally speaking, the more horsepower, the faster it will f...

Re: Holding up maille chausses, how did they do it?
I wonder in what manner the chausses were "sewn" to the hauberk? As in knitted with iron rings? Was this a permanent attachment? If so, how would you don the armour? The hauberk must have a slit down the front or back to allow the wearer to get in and out of the armour, like a butterfly escaping its...

They more I think about it though, the more I wonder. "Do I really need a gambeson?" Re: Hardening for a Coat of Plates
While it is possible that some original coats of plates were case hardened, I bet a lot of them were just plain old mild steel. In SCA combat, due to the overlapping nature of the plates you still get good protection, and the dents are hidden by the jupon. If you get serious dents, they can be knock...

Hey Ursus, I think you are doing a fantastic service. You are documenting our history. When you look at the few grainy pictures available from our beginnings, 50 years from now people will look back at your pictures to see people who aren't here anymore to remember us as we were.

I've been looking at some cheaper wood bows on Ebay, but I'd rather help out an Archiver/SCA person.
