Re: Extra fine/dense mail

The biggest problem with wire thickness is that the Indian stuff is overly flattened. Which is probably driven because it makes it easier to punch the rivet hole in a bigger "landing pad". What they really need with their flattening press is a means to control the depth of the flattening tool. I wi...

Re: How to attach the bling?

[quotee]I would be tempted to support the rivet head with a nail set standing upright in a vise. Wouldn't be fun but it would keep the rest of the stamping out of the operation.[/quote]

I'd be worried about the unsupported portion of the rivet inside the stamping buckling during riveting.

Re: How to attach the bling?

If these are stampings, and they are thus "hollow", I would worry about them collapsing while trying to peen the rivets. To fix this, you might put washers under (inside) the stampings as you pass the rivets through, to support the stamping during peening. Or you could pour molten lead into them fro...

I believe your head measurement is incorrect. Unless your head is as big around as my chest. :)

Re: How a Man Shall Be Armed, a Video Essay of the 14c Harne

I continue to be sad that there is no evidence for the vest in the 14th century. I tried it and found it worked great - better than pointing to the arming coat which is what I currently do (or did, last time I fought). The problem with pointing the legs to the arming coat is that unless your arming ...

I would try insulation. Perhaps the pink foam kind you can buy in 4x8 sheets. Even 1/2" thick stuff would go a long way.

Re: Good Starter Helm $100 plus shipping

It looks to me to be an SCA-legal variant of of a late 12th-century style of helm, often associated with "The Crusades". The slats are an anachronism to satisfy full head protection requirements for SCA use. You could cover this with maille or a leather aventail. The face gives me the impression of ...

White wool/linen cope and mantel (full cloak and half-circle

I made these several years ago as part of a Knight Templar impression for doing Living History. They have only been used perhaps 5 times total and are in excellent condition. The cloaks are made of 100% wool and lined with 100% linen. Ties are made from linen. All visible seams are hand sewn. All fi...

Re: Upholstery brocade to cover a brigandine?

While care should be taken I think this might be over cautious. I use basic 3 penny common nails and other then ensuring that there is no flash under the head I drive them through the fabric from the backside so their tip pierces, pull it out, usss it through from the froon and peen. Maybe 1 in 200...

Re: Upholstery brocade to cover a brigandine?

The harshest problem to watch out for when using fabric for a riveted coat of plates armour is the rivets! Cloth is not nearly as forgiving as leather. If, when you are setting the rivet, the rivet head cocks even the slightest, the edge of the rivet head will bite into and cut the fabric, ruining i...

Awesome work on the period references.

I made many coats of plates using upholstery fabric with a canvas backing. Fabric can be plenty durable for a foundation for such armour.

Yup, as was said, the dags are not intended to be armoured. They are a decorative extension of the jupon.

There is another recent thread around here about how to protect the hips when wearing a coat of plates.

My contribution here is to warn you from collapsible cups. They suck. If you put a hot drink in them, the rings will expand and the cup will collapse.

Re: Opinions: pigface visor thickness?

If the helm is not constructed of at least 1/16th inch mild steel, it is not legal to fight in. I have never had a marshal try to inspect the thickness of the metal that makes up my helm. Maybe they are just eyeballing the thickness they see around the eye slot, I don't know. But this is not an area...

Re: Hanging swords on the wall in a 13 yr olds room?

I would make or buy some simple "U" shaped brackets and screw them securely to the wall, either by anchoring in the studs or with good drywall anchors.

You can pick up the sword at any time by lifting it out of the bracket, but it can't jump out of the bracket.

The proposed liner shown in the thread: http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB3/download/file.php?id=50307 Looks reasonable to me and, having the liner tied to the helm in several locations means that the helm does not seem likely to rotate freely from the liner. Lightweight leather or even a couple of layers of canvas will do the trick. Remember the protection comes from the plates, not the jupon.

I would think that veg-tanned leather is probably a closer approximation to period leather than chrome-tanned.

I think the usual method if you were clad with a breastplate would be for your arming coat and maille to cover the hips and thighs.

I have always liked the armoured skirt idea like shown above also. I think a skirt of scaled would look awesome.
