Re: Chivalry Bookshelf-Author Resolution,or "Don't Buy My Bo
I've been inactive on the Archive for over a year. My attentions have turned to competition black-powder shooting in the N-SSA. I just read all 25 pages of the disaster last night. It's probably the most depressing thing I've ever read here. I've only met Brian and his wife a couple of times. We met...

Re: The authenticity paradox
I agree with those who say there is no paradox. If you imagine a 14th century reenactment where all the fighters look identical to Edward the Black Prince, you see what I mean. Using these standards, the more authentic each individual is, the less authentic the whole becomes. This is a false dichoto...

I think, too, that maybe people in general were in a lot better shape, and they were acclimated to living outdoors.

Re: 1000th post! Body Armour - Proper Fit vs functionality?
Mostly, the COP gets in the way when I try to throw shots or I get really bad armour bites. I had this problem with my original coat of plates design. Basically, I did not make the arm holes inset enough to enable free movement of the arms. On my last coat of plates I made a dummy of my torso by we...

Re: Kettle helm
'Kettle helms' were in use from antiquity. From ancient Rome and Greece, they came into, and out of fashion, depending on when, and where. Boeotian helms, pilos helms, some ancient depictions of latin warriors depict brimmed helmets, etc... These are all 'kettle helms'. Hell, laquered examples were...

Re: Kettle helm
One of my favorite go-to primers on medieval armour continues to be Arms and Armour of the Medieval Knight by David Edge and John Miles Paddock. It gives a nice, easy-to-read, well-illustrated overview of arms and armour from the 11th century through, as I recall, the 16th.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kettle_hat The kettle helm made its appearance in the 12th century, and was in use in one style or another even into the 14th, and of course in modern times also. While primarily associated with lower-class and infantry use, it was also used by knights and appreciated fo...

If I were going to spend $7 on building a camper I believe I'd start with an actual camper and make some kind of siding for it to make it look like a house.

It is great to come back to the Archive after a long hiatus to find this wonderful thread. I have struggled with braies/hose for years, and posted some of my trials and tribulations here. Looking for a wood turner to make a .58" diameter dowel rod
Some years ago I had a wood turner make a nice custom castle finial for our pavilion. I forget who made it. I'd like to hook up with them again if possible. In any case, I am looking for a dowel rod turned to .58" in diamter, about 12" long. I will actually be cutting it down from that size but that...

Re: SCA Topic- The Measuring
I think it's rather like the float valve in your toilet. When expectations rise high, less water will flow in. As water leaks out, eventually expectations will lower until more water flows in. In this way it is a self-regulating problem. Expectations will change depending on the quantity of people. ...

Re: Would this work for a COP?
Canvas works fine for coats of plates. I used two layers of cotton duck canvas to make this: http://www.forth-armoury.com/photo_gallery/coat_of_plates/cop.htm You do need to be careful when setting rivets in canvas as a miss-strike or cocked rivet head can cut canvas pretty easily. I put leather was...

I don't think there are any rule problems with using an actual metal chain, as per period, for a lanyard to your helm, your sword, or your dagger.
Much as I hate to suggest it, you could also use plastic chain.

Here are pictures of my arming coat. http://imgur.com/a/xXPT0 Note that I leave the coat just like this with the legs pointed in place prior to donning them. I put the legs on first, then put my arms into the coat. In this way I can don the armour without help. At least this part of it. :) Steve

Re: Riveted mail vs Welded mail ... pros and cons
My problem was capital. I didn't have enough cash to buy big enough shipments to keep the inventory channels full. But it was doomed from the start anyway. By putting the means of production into the hands of the Indians, I made myself a middleman. Once the product became a commodity, there was no p...

Sorry I did not get to mine last night - I had to take my mother to the Tennessee Valley Civil War Round Table lecture. I'll do it this weekend.
Mine is similar in arrangement to guy's except since my coat is longer, I could not point to the outside of the coat.

The virtue of the welded stuff is that it is virtually indestructible.
The downsides are the ahistorical look and the inability for most people to be able to tailor it themselves.

Thanks for the kind words, guys! Ring shape - for me I am always annoyed at the lack of "pent roof". I bet that is a royal pain, but it changes the whole look of the piece.
