The thing about great helm desigs, is that the main target areas are the seams, where you have overlapped layers. These add strength where it's really needed, as well as the mass needed to protect you from the transferred force of SCA-style blows. So you can actually do well enough with 16ga, if you...

I agree with you on the counter-sunk rivets. The point of using thinner brass, however, is to not have it sticking so far out from the steel. That's the "clunky" issue we were addressing.
quote:
Originall...

There's a book called "Armor" by Petr Klucina that has at least one pic of a gridded grand guard. It's a cheapish book, I got it for $10 off of a Borders sale table. "The World of the Medieval Knight" by Peter Gravett may have one, it'a also an affordable book and well worth owning even if it lacks ...

Nice, I really like the filed edge on the pooks. Match your brass to the underlying cop a little better next time, and it'll look better. You can also use a much lighter brass, and it won't stick out as much, and will to my eye look less "clunky" I can't tell for sure...did you slightly dish the lam...

Most klapps are held in place with a leather strap and the hinge. If both or either get damaged/worn out, then you can run into the problem you describe. Some of us make them with stop-pins the fit to the sides of the visor and help increase the durability of the system. ------------------ Gundob...

The type I make is essentially a sallet-shaped close helm. The bevor is mounted to the helm at the same points that the visor is, and pivots up and down. The articulations of the lower section of the bevor allow you to tilt your head back and turn to the side without exposing anything. You can't mov...

The bulk discount doesn't apply to a single harness. The reason why is that there isn't the same sort of "assembly line" sort of operation I can use in the production of a batch of spaulders/elbow cops/whatever. So...The discounted Henry harness would run $7500 [still a hell of a deal, IMO]. Anyway....
