I think Sasha is being over-curmudgeonly. Buffing is grunt work, and it can be dangerous, but I don't believe it requires much practice to pick up. Harbor freight offers an 8", 3/4 hp buffer/grinder for $100. Have your friend buy one, and a minimum of four, 8" spiral sewn cotton buffs from Eastwood ...

Hot rolled comes normalized [maybe even annealed], but once you start dishing and planishing, it work-hardens, and becomes essentially identical to cold-rolled. You might notice a difference on a project with only simple curves, but for SCA stuff I doubt you'll see a real difference in combat. A vin...

The faq up there ^ is for the UBB board. There is an armor faq, on the main page. Don't carve a dishing bowl. Just grab a heavy ball peen or your dishing hammer, and beat a depression into the wood, and make it match the face of your dishing hammer. You don't need any more dish than you have hammer....

Well, 18ga will serve for some pieces, especially if heavily fluted. I would avoid it for "main" target areas, unless you're talking about pieces with lots of overlapping pieces. Otto, if you have room for a cutting table [where the shear sits in lower section, on the edge of a largish table, and the metal rides on the table right at the level of the blades] then you will have no trouble cutting large sheets. Otherwise, it'll take some manhandling. I buy new steel cut down t...
